I specified a closed casket for my late wife, simply because I knew that's what she wanted. The funeral home director said that was fine, but if I changed my mind at any point he could open it, because he would prepare her the same for a closed casket as he would for an open one.

Back then, apparently, one could not rent a casket. She was cremated, but I had to buy the casket. I knew a woman who had lost her husband shortly after I lost my wife, and she was able to rent his casket. Or maybe the funeral home ripped me off. Who knows....

I didn't know you could rent a casket either. Maybe depends on state?

FWIW- 2013 summer in Massachusetts, closet casket, priest in funeral home (not full mass) the cost was 7.5k
