"Temporary" seems like a long time for some.
Still trying to figure it out. Can't pinpoint it yet due to my lack of knowledge. No luck with "googling".

Yes, I would think so. Talking makes a person feel the pain again IMO. I'm of course speaking only from my own experience but I don't think I am any too different than a lot of people. It really is an individual reaction/choice.

I wonder if this is what some people term it as a "selective mutism", and in some cases that never outgrows the childhood phase?

nb: in my opening post, I mentioned "mutation". My apologies, in my ignorance I have confused "mutism" with "mutation".

"Childhood phase"? What are you talking about? I thought your original question was about GRIEF and people not talking? IDK what or if it's called anything, I just know some people want to be left alone.

I am doing a lot of guessing myself. Sigh! I have never seen that person until very recently, but others have described her on occasions "selective(ly) mutism".
