My husband's brother recently passed away. We have received personal sympathy cards with money. Do we give that money to the family or use it for a memorial of our own choosing?

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

Unless you or DH specified a purpose for the money in your brother-in-law's obituary then you are free to do with it as you see fit.

It is not customary in my area of the country to get money but in the areas I've lived where it is the money is often used to help pay for a memorial/headstone/urn or is simply used by the family to help offset expenses for the funeral.

I would say that there are no hard and fast rules on how to use the money. In this case I would probably work with your brother-in-law's surviving family members.

Use it for what you need to use it for. People did not designate it. Funeral expenses, gravestone, etc.
