Almost everyone wants to leave a lingering mark in the world. Most people want to have left a footprint.
I'm a cemetery buff, and I can't tell you how many gravestones bear the epitaph, "Gone But Not Forgotten", and they are completely overgrown with weeds. Gone, indeed, and forgotten.
Our desire to be remembered, I think, is quite strong.
I don't think life and death are part of any "Master's" plan, and I hope that loved ones will not have lingering painful feelings after I die...that would be an ugly legacy. Let feelings go, don't grab them and clutch on to them as a kind of identity...live the best life you can after I'm dead.
Since my spouse passed, I find comfort in these words:
Grieve not...nor speak of me with tears...but laugh and talk of me...as though I were beside you. I loved you so...t'was Heaven here with you. - Isla Richardson
I don't think those who leave us want US to live in misery and grief...they want us to get on with our lives. I would want that FOR SURE.
The poem is not about Forgetting someone. Good grief, amazing how many read things differently.
I think about my folks every day and they would not want me to live in misery over them.
When a dear friend passed back in 2004, I sent this poem to his daughters and they ended up making up a "memorial card" with their dad's photo and this poem. They handed out this card to those at his memorial in the park that he loved to go to. They also bought a brick implented near a bench in the park with Andy's name. He was not religious but very much into environment.

Those are wonderful words too, Ellwood. Thank you for sharing.

I don't visit the cemetery or manicure the gravestones but I absolutely remember my loved ones.
You don't have to go to the cemetery to remember someone.

Exactly.
