We used to have a open shooting range. I was changing my targets and had one shot out of my hand. After that we carried as we changed targets and had one man on the tailgate armed and ready. It quit being fun real quick as you can imagine.
That's terrible. Gun owners always seem to get along very well at the range from my experience...I can't count the times I've struck up a conversation or vice versa with an otherwise total stranger, exchanged ideas, tips, shot each other's guns and generally had a good time socially. It just goes to show the world is full of whack jobs.
I saw that story on another board I frequent. That is really sad and also alarming. I've been a competitive shooter since I was a small boy and have spent countless thousands of hours on shooting ranges of all kinds. It has been my experience that my fellow shooters are the most generous, decent, and ethical people I've ever had the pleasure of associating with.
I've never even given it a second thought that that sort of thing might happen. I guess if a guy were to go out in the woods to an unregulated, unsupervised spot for target shooting it may be a concern, but I think this is more of an anomaly than something we need to be afraid of. I suppose one can never be too careful though....
I guess it is a good thing I live on a fairly large rural property and have my own private range huh?
Theft and murder can happen almost anywhere. One must always pay attention to what's going on around him/her.
It happened to a couple of dove hunters in Prince George's County, MD 10 or 15 years ago. They were accosted by a couple of the local gang bangers/crews, whatever, and murdered.
A prison guard, who will now get to be one of the inmates (if he's proven guilty). You'd think they'd be the LAST ones to ever want to end up in there.
I was warned 25 years ago about bumper stickers and crap on trucks. That Ruger sticker or NRA sticker tells people/thiefs what you enjoy. They will watch and rob you when you are not home, or even enter ready to shoot knowing you may be armed.
I scuba dive, we do not have dive stickers on our trucks. Thief sees a truck with a dive sticker he knows you are going to be in the ocean for a couple hours and you left your wallet in the truck.
Unless it was a surprise attack, how on earth does someone with a gun get murdered? Wouldn't you just shoot the guy? I would.
Have you noticed that in our society it is dangerous to do *anything* alone any more? What a depressing thought.
