My family has been trying to convince me to get a gun...so I have gotten an airsoft rifle. I was planning to use it to take shots at critters who invade my yard. Is this wise? Is there anything I should know or do before I use it?

Point the end with the little round hole away from you before you pull the trigger.
Tip #2 please take a couple of NRA gun safety and basic firearm courses before you buy a real gun. If you will please listen to me you will thank me one day. They cost.$50-$150.
Tip #3 don't shoot an air soft at a robber they will get really mad!
I suspect they are not loud, the pistols aren't loud anyway. I have a 1911 model, it is good for target practice in your garage. My son got hit in the ear lobe with one of the plastic 6 MM pellets, he said it really hurt, but it didn't break the skin. People use these guns for games, shooting at each other, wearing something over your eyes is mandatory. They hurt when you get hit, even through heavy clothing. I wouldn't recommend shooting at anything you don't want to hurt. Use it for targets and you will be fine.
Airsoft is a toy. A cheap toy and shouldn't be used to shoot at anything but paper ever.
It will do nothing but hurt an animal on your property. The odds of killing it are slim but you could injust it so don't do it.
If you have a reason to own a gun then buy a GUN not a toy. If you're plan is to do anything but shooting at paper and cans, pack the thing up and take it back.
If you plan to shoot paper and can then all you need to know is load, point, shoot, repeat and don't point it at anything other than the target.
I'd doubt an airsoft would hurt a squirrel. They are pretty fluffy, so i'd imagine the energy from the 6mm pellet would be absorbed well. Larger animals..you'll just **** off.
If you have a critter problem, get a proper firearm. You didnt say what animals you had, but for small stuff a .22LR should do the trick (not gonna recommend AR-15 for chipmonks).
