You're right about that, unless it's for Law Enforcement (including retirees-go figure) or an FFL Licensee. I thought our government was supposed to be "Of the people, by the people, and for the people." What makes L.E. personnel special?
The way the law reads is something like this: No person shall manufacture, buy, sell, lend, import, or cause to be imported, any magazine with a capacity in excess of 10 rounds in the State of California. Basically, if you didn't have it here before the ban, you can't bring it here, according to the law (with the above noted exceptions). If I remember correctly, the law states that you can't even lend a hi-cap magazine to a friend! That seems ridiculous to me.
If you buy hi-cap magazines out of state, they must remain out of state according to the law. I have heard, though not first hand, that someone (BATF?) has been known to check California license plates at the Las Vegas gun shows, and question the drivers of those vehicles when they return to California. I don't know if there is any truth to the rumor, though.
I'll be glad when I leave this state and am no longer subject to these useless, ridiculous laws.

Your M1A may have a G.I bolt? The older the M1A the more chance it has G.I parts in it.ambackforum.com has a M1A section that has alot of good info on identifying parts.
If allowed to order high-cap mags get the M14-M1A checkmate industry ones (CMI),they are currently making them for the military and are up to mil-spec with the welding points.U.S.A brand mags are nothing but trouble usually.
.44mag.com usually sells CMI mags.I bought 10 from them and was a good transaction.

Some would say that I, too, have an arsenal. I probably wouldn't agree, but I'm working towards that goal. I also have a Glock that I depend on - a model 23. It's one of my easiest to use firearms, and one that is excellent for personal defense. I am also reasonably proficient with it. I'll see how my new Springfield Armory XD45 compares when I get a chance to shoot it regularly. It's about the same size as my Glock, but shoots .45 ACP instead of .40 S&W.

There is some truth to the reliability of both weapons, I know they did comparison tests in the late 1960's between the AK-47 and the Colt M16/AR-15 by dragging both of them through mud and dirt; the AK-47 was still able to fire, and the M16 wouldn't even feed the first round, and that's because of the looser tolerances in the AK-47 design. But over the years, Colt and other AR-15 look-alike makers improved it. I can fire my AR-15 all day without any problems.

Went to vegas over the weekend and stayed at the Silverton which is connected to the Bass Pro shop, I was overwhelmed at the gun shop, they didn't have much as far as magizines went, no high capacity stuff but they had everything else, I guess nevada laws are a lot differant than Ca. Ammo on the open shelves along with primers and gun powder, I have to say I was a little light headed at first, I didn't loose a penny gambling but that shop cost me a few dollars here in town our gun shops suck, a Bass Pro shop will open in 2008, the local shops are in trouble when it does.

I would have to say that it's more than the local shops that are in trouble... I'll really have to keep an eye on my wallet, as it might get into trouble, too! I'm looking forward to when it opens.

I love to shoot. I cannot walk the fields anymore because of osteoarthritis so I do most of my shooting either at the family farm or at the local indoor ranges. I have owned hundreds of guns in various calibers over the years but 99% of my shooting now is with .22 rifles or handguns.
On the family farm I have lifesize swinging metal targets of prairie dogs set up at various ranges. Since these targets are only 1/8 inch thick anything larger than .22LR is out of the question. The land on the farm is almost perfectly level and since there are three sections back to back East to West without any roads going through it is safe to shoot just about any caliber weapons, however we still do most of the shooting with the .22s.
Even more fun than the metal targets is our 100 yard "Tennis Ball Dash" range that we have set up. We have a strip of original Buffalo Grass about 200 yards wide and one mile long on the North edge of the first section. We set up a grid a lot like the chalk lines on a football field. The shooting line is 20 yards behind the Zero yard line where different colored tennis balls are set up. Each shooter can only shoot one specific colored ball. Each shooter is allowed 15 rounds and when the ready, aim, fire command is given all the shooters try to get their colored tennis ball across the 100 yard end zone line. The winner is the one who gets his ball across the line first with the fewest number of shots . You would think the shooter using a semi automatic would have an advantage over the levers, bolts etc but the best scores I've seen are from my older Nephew with a Thompson/Contender with a 2-1/2 power scope in a .221 Fireball. His best score that I have witnessed was four shots. Next best is a young cousin who uses a M77 Bolt action rifle in .22LR and a 4x scope. His best is six shots . Even the older shooters like me get into this competition. This is one type of shooting where shooters of any age and gender can have a great time.

That sounds like fun. I bet I could come up with something similar using my airsoft guns. I already shoot at metal targets like you do, though I only have a couple of them. My issue is that I don't have much room for such activities, so that's why the airsoft guns would work well. Plus, they're fun and cheap to shoot!
