1911s are treasures, all of them. You just look at one and you can see the simplicity if design, the robustness of materials and the thought that went into the engineering.

Couple that with the year it came out and how advanced it was and you know it is a gem. It will be made and remade for a lot of years to come.
No-one has mentioned the very fine guns that Para Ordnance makes. With all their very well engineered improvements like an enlarged ejection port and their killer extractor?

My dad has had a Para Ordinance 1911 on order with 2 different places for a year now and still hasn't got the gun. He is a fan of the 1911 as he shot it and qualified expert with it in the military while being in the medical branch.
I've never shot one, but will probably get one someday as it is an iconic gun. The ones I don't like are the one's that seem to appeal the harley davidson crowd. You know the guys that dress up like pirates on the weekend and ride these 1200 pound harley's covered in 300 pounds of chrome and tassels. A lot of these 1911's seem all tarted up with fancy woods and shiny metal and I just want a plain ole military spec 1911.

I don't go in for too much "fancy", but since ah've got <koff>several<koff>, some of 'em ARE a tad unique.
Hey guys, any advice on a reasonably priced 1911. I would like to purchase my first one. I love the feel in my hand, but want to ease into it without spending too much money. I would love to know what features I should look for and brands to avoid.

Regarding your last post, is like asking what type of car should a person buy, many answers, and none of them wrong. What kind of price range are you looking to spend? What do you want to use this 1911 for range use only, carry conceal, both; or a home defense/safe queen? What features do you like that are important to you, the traditional looking 1911 used in the first two world wars? or one with all of the bells and whistles?
Now as far as my personal taste, I like a 1911 that fits my hand, and that first it needs to have a beaver tail, I have several 1911 and when I get a new one I first make the determination am I going to carry this allot or just once in a while, if it is going to be carried allot, then I would prefer a lightweight one, the trade off is a little more felt recoil.
Next I like night sights on a weapon, but that is not a deal breaker.
I also like a beveled magazine well, but again that is nice if it has it, but if it does not, then no big deal.
I like the feel of the bob-tail, most of those I have seen are in the commander size weapon.
And I almost always change the grips on a 1911 to something I like better, but that is the nice thing about 1911, they can be a project gun, that will work through all of its transitions.
