I've been sent on a quest by my father to find a certain gun and I've hit a roadblock in my search so I wonder if anyone on the forum could help me locate a particular gun.

Back in the early 70's my father bought a brand new Smith and Wesson Model 19-3 revolver and had it for many, many years. He ended up selling it and a couple other items in the mid 80's because of the farm crisis and he needed money to maintain his crops. Now he's 70 and is starting to get nostalgic about some of the older guns he used to have and has gone on a bit of a spree trying to acquire them back.

One gun that's been elusive is a Smith and Wesson Model 19 and I was wondering if any of you know where I could find one. It has to have these specs:

Smith and Wesson Model 19-3 (any - would likely be okay though)
Blued Steel (above 90%)
6 inch barrel
Checkered wood grips

Anyone know of someone who'd be interested in selling a Model 19 for a reasonable price? Any gun stores in your area have one for sale that matches this description?

I've called all over Phoenix looking for one and I've been having one hell of a time finding these criteria.

You can find them but they were phased out in favor of the 686 which made to this day. The 686 is more balanced than the 19. The biggest difference is the lug under the bbl is all the way out to the end of the bbl where on the 19 it ends just ahead of the ejector. I traded my 19 for a 686 in the late 80s and have had it ever since. The 686 is an L frame and the 66/19 was a K frame, the K frame was designed for 38special and some think it can not take a diet of 357 on a regular basis. I would hands down go for the 686. Unless your dad is stuck on this one gun and would not even go for the 66 which is a 19 in Stainless then go for the 686 its a better gun and you may pay a bit more for it but its worth it over time. If a blued gun is what you have to have then the 586 is a 686 blued. I recomend a SS as its easy to care for and is very hard to rust. Chemicals can break down the ceramic oxide the protects SS from rust but other than that very difficult to rust. A bit of oil and its good to go. I put my guns in a plastic bag and leave it open to let out moisture but coat them if not used in RIGS grease and they are as good as the day I bought them.

If you can't find one at a gun store, I would think you would find one at a gun show. M19 is not exactly a rare gun.

He wants his "old" gun back so pretty much set on a 19-3. I actually went on Gunbroker and am currently bidding on one, never bought a gun from an online site before but I'm hearing good things about it.

We shall see! Thank you all!

Have you ever heard of GunBroker.com? Everytime I've looked for a model 19 I've found one, while they are not plentiful, they aren't rare either. My favorite is the model 19 with a round butt and 2.5 " barrel. One poster says the 686 is 'better balanced', I would say that is a matter of personal choice, but what I'm really thinking is hog wash. Get your Dad what he wants, it shouldn't be that hard to find. Price is another matter, you won't find one for what he sold his for.

Can any of you S&W .357 people tell me about the PYTHON? I went looking for a S&W 357 and have noticed that PYTHONS are very highly priced and would be interested to know why. Anyone?

FWIW.

Phthon is a Colt product .It uses the same frame as the original Trooper. Bascially it was Colts flagship revolver and thus the price. Qualtiy lke with any S&W or Colt will depend on age as to fit.

I am not registered on line with any gun stores. I am a bit older and have a bad time buying site un seen except maybe for a picture. So how does that work? The drop down won't tell me unless i get registered.

I am guessing FFl to FFL right? What about long guns? Same thing?
