Saw a piece today on a newtwork news show about "smart guns". Specifically, handguns and shoulder fired long guns that will not shoot unless the shooter wears a ring with a chip in it that activates an electrical device in the gun itself to let it shoot. One manufacturer in Germany has a watch that does the same thing. How do you feel about these? Personally I don't know about my life depending them as I am sure they are not foolproof.

Same as those we see in sci fi movies, guns of the future. But since there's what 300,000 firearms in the country I wouldn't expect them to be replaced with these soon. Anyway, I'm leery of anything with the name "smart" on it, especially a firearm.

I wouldn't trust my life to anything electronic, battery powered or "smart".

Let the cops use them for ten to twenty years and see how that works for them...they're the ones always getting shot with their own weapons anyway.

Besides, the quickest way to disarm everyone with a "smart gun" is a EMP...now what?

Ain't gonna happen in THIS house.

Scenario: Front door kicked in....in the struggle, the gun is knocked from my hands and lands at my wifes' feet. The assailant is about to make me his personal shishkabob with a knife....but since the magic decoder ring is on MY hand, she's reduced to carefully watching the guy so she can provide a good, detailed witness statement.

No, thanks - this kinda stuff has already been tried, and found to have WAY too many weak points.

^^^ And THAT's if it even decides to WORK!

I can survive a computer or cell phone crashing...not my sidearm!

Hey bad guy...give me a minute while I reboot my handgun....

Smart guns are a myth at least right now. I don't want to put my life depending on a gun that has electronics in it. The beauty of a gun is its totally mechanical. That is why I love vintage cars. They do not have computers in them. Its simple technology that just works. When you add crap that does nothing to how something delivers its end product and only adds to the complication for some other reason then you have diminished its reliability. You may as well be makeing a Rube Goldberg machine.

Demand drives the market. If there were a true demand for smart guns then someone would be investing into R&D for them.

Smart guns have way too many chances for failure when you absolutely have to have it. Should you need your weapon, you need it in seconds and those seconds are a life time. You do not need the added chance of failure.
