I bought one close to 30 years ago at a gunshow new for about $125-150 and put thousands of rounds through it. Nothing say merry christmas like a brick of .22 under the tree.
I was about 13 at the time and had saved up my mowing money, odd jobs, birthday money and whatnot.
Still shoots like a champ.
I read an article on them years ago that said they are almost indestructible, at least by normal use.
The day my 1st son was born in 1968 I bought him a new 10/22 for $45. The other two boys had to wait until they were 5 years old before they got theirs (last one in 1978).
Those were the days when the standard carbine came with a walnut stock.
All three little rifles are still like NIB, except one has 3 or 4 dents in the stock from closet damage.
Gave each son a BX-25 mag for Christmas in 2011 (they were on sale).
I ordered 3 more from Ruger January 20th, but they haven't been shipped yet.
I intended to get an SW M&P 15-22(Found it for the same price I saw it last year, $449), but with all the talk about banning AR style rifles I thought I should look for a Ruger 10/22 instead. Went to five stores, three local gun shops and two Dick's, all were sold out and didn't know when they'd get any Ruger's in(The third local shop said they were supposed to have already received a shipment but that it hadn't come in, thought he should get them in March).
According to Dick's and Academy's website the prices for Rugers are the same, don't know if they'd go up for local shops.
Hope you have ammo too.
I'm with you. I went back and forth on the M&P15-22. When the gun grab began I figured I'd lost my shot at getting one. I've all but given up on getting one at this point. However some AR models are beginning to surface again on the shelves in the stores in/around where I live. They never last too long, but they are trickling in again. Ammo is actually harder to get than anything else. I have a little set aside, but not as much as I'd like to have.
I do want a 10/22. I actually plan to get one for each of my 3 kids too. I've seen them with pink laminate stocks, which I know my daughter will love. I want mine in just plain ole' hardwood. The next $220 or so that I have that I don't need to spend on something boring like bills/utilities I'm marching myself down to Gander Mountain to see if I can find my 10/22.
Its impossible to get the mags or the guns right now. I just scored one from Wally world for 225. Blue NIB. I also hit the walmart just right and walked back into Sporting goods and saw a case of Remington that stock had dropped off. I opened it up and it was 10 boxes of Remington golden hollow points 225 rounds per box. I asked the lady who was stocking about them and she said that the register was closed so take what I wanted and go up front and pay for them. I wanted all of them, so I took the case and for 100 bucks I got 2250 rounds of Remington 22lr. I also scored three boxes of Wolf 7.62x39. It was a good morning.
$350? Sheesh, does it come with a 24k gold trigger? I bought an all stainless with birch stock in the early 90's for $150.
The last blue ones I saw were less then $230.
The price and availability of any firearm in the 1990's has very little to do with today's economic and political upheaval with firearms.
Also Ruger has not made any steel or stainless steel receivers for 10/22 rifles. Cast aluminum with blued or stainless like plated material.
I doubt any stainless 10/22 has stainless steel parts in the receivers.

A Ruger 10/22 is not worth $350. Walmart and other places have all you want for about $225. I've even seen $209. This isn't 1990....it's fall '12 and winter '13. A Ruger 10/22 is NOT worth $350. Much better guns out there....
BTW.....when I said all stainless...I meant it was not two-tone.
Hi OP - $350 is not bad for a 10/22. Try $450 for the standard version, or $950 for a tactical. 5000 CCI standard setting you back $400. Welcome to Norway. My point being, be happy it doesn't cost more than it currently does.
If you can find the takedown version at a reasonable price, people who have bought it over here in Norway are very happy with it. It's highly portable obviously, and accuracy and reliability doesn't suffer. I would get one if I had room in the safe.
