Hello..my husband and I will be driving cross country the end of May to California and up into the north west returning to our native home residence in Virginia. We both have a CCP however after reading several websites concerning not gun friendly states we are worried about even taking one with us. Five of the states we are traveling through basically do not honor our permits and stated guns need to be locked up in the trunk, in a case and ammo separate to avoid a potential 4th class felony. My biggest fear is that we will be a target with our Virginia plates and if they run them our permits will be known, more subject to potential stops. In closing I would feel safer having my fire arm going this distance and staying in strange places...any suggestions? Thank you..

please remember that if a cop wants to search your vehicle, always refuse, and have your trunk keyed differently than your ignition key and disconnect any trunk opener too.

cops can only search what is open for a terry frisk, and saying no to a cop for a search is not grounds for a PC search.

Many cars have no trunk key, the only way to get in is the button or key fob.

You have a couple choices, carry how you want and hope you don't get caught, or follow the laws of each state as you travel through them.

best way is if a cop tells you to get out of your vehicle, roll up the windows, lock the doors and shut the door behind you meanwhile pocketing the key.

a terry frisk does not include anything that cannot be anything behind a locked vehicle that the driver or passenger is not in.

I have told lots of cops no to a search. been threatened quite a bit through bluster and bluff, and always had the cop backoff.

Hi...some of your terms I do not understand. What is a terry frisk? From what I have read unless there is a search warrant the answer to searching your home or vehicle is NO, I get that. Probably my biggest mistake is to be so honest that I volunteer info. We do not have time to be escorted to closest judge to post bail if we do not follow the game plan, what a way to ruin a vacation. Honestly I think I will purchase a taser, carry mace and my bowie knight...did not see any laws for those:}

I am not sure I understand your post.

If you follow the law...legal is....legal.

As for being the target....have you ever given any thought to how many 100's of thousands of ccw permit holders there are in the U.S..

To believe that your vehicle would be singled out because you come from a "gun friendly state" seems childish and naive.

Just why do you believe that police in other parts of the country are biased against Virginia....the civil war has been over for years now.

Additionally, as a result of the "Firearms Owner Protection Act" signed by then president Ronald Reagan in the mid 1980's, as long as the weapon is legal in the beginning state and the ending state, there is no violation of any law, when traveling through ANY other states while traveling.

Lastly, you have made a giant leap in logic to assume that all police officers are anti-gun.

If you are truly concerned, why don't simply telephone the state police in the states that you fear, and learn the legal requirements in the transportation of you firearms.

Understand, the Police are not simply some giant machine designed to entrap otherwise law abiding citizens and arrest them without cause.

If you call, I think you will be surprised at how helpful they can be.

Although I appreciate all responses I consider some or your remarks condescending. Considering all the recent hysteria from politicians and legislators to change their states current gun laws, I am going to feel very nervous about taking someones word sitting in a police office. States websites have the most recent gun laws however they seem to have contradicting recent amendments on some. Appears that I struck a nerve with you about the "police", do not believe I stated all police are anti-gun. It only takes one over zealous greenhorn to ruin a vacation, I do not consider that childish or naive just realistic. Curious as to your remark about the Civil War...where was that going...If I lived in another gun friendly state I would have the same feeling, BTW not from Virginia, just happened to like living in a friendly conservative environment

Simply to clarify...

The reference to the "Civil War" was based on your wording on your line five in the original post.

If I may, "my biggest fear is that we will be targeted with our Virginia plates and if they run them our permits will be known...".

Now, in this most recent post, you state, "I am going to feel very nervous about taking someones word sitting in a police office..."

Yet you seek the advise of anonymous persons on the Internet to council you as to a legal and lawful way to proceed.

The Police are not there to entrap you. If you ask a question, they will certainly give you best answer possible as it pertains to current law and it's requirements.

It seems to me that the best and most accurate answer will come from the authorities charged with enforcing the laws, as opposed to story told and repeated on the Internet.

I hope this helps.

Actually in the true spirit of these forums...I trust in making an appropriate decision based on persons experiences versus on relying just on any authoritative approach. If you think otherwise why are you even giving any commentary here unless your goal is to attempt to make folks feel ignorant. The many years I have sought "council" if I may here, have provided me with ample resources to arrive at a conclusion for my particular situation.

perhaps if you told us your intended route or at least the states you are concerned with, we could better identify any potential problems.

Also, what state was your permit issued?
