I took the opportunity today to go to the NRA range and then tour the museum. Since I don't live all that far from Fairfax, VA, I don't have much of an excuse for not going sooner (I moved here last July). I was under the impression it was next to impossible to get any range time there. I didn't even have to wait today.

If you're in the Northern Virginia area, I highly recommend both.

Range Costs- NRA members have a reduced rate to use the range ($15) otherwise it's $20. If it's your first time using the range, you have to take a test and pay a one time $10 fee. You're issued a range card for future use. Also, they do have ammunition to purchase.

Range facilities- it was a very nice range. One huge plus is the ventilation system. It goes out to 50 yards and the control panel at each lane allows you to place the target at any distance. Largest caliber I saw being fired on the range was 7.62 (see their website for caliber restrictions). Staff was professional and friendly.

Museum- It's free. It is an amazing collection of firearms. There are works of art in there. I can't imagine what the value of their collection is. I was running short on time so I have to go back so I can spend more time looking at their collection. It is simply incredible.

I visited the museum many years ago (1974), when it was still in DC. To an ol' Texas country boy, it was like magic, seein' all the wide variety of guns inside. I was stationed in Norfolk, but HAD to make the trip - and don't regret it to this day. I'm sure they ALL had better things to do, but folks from all over their office came by to say "Hi", and to thank ME for coming. Need to go back up and look at it again - bet I'd see tons of stuff I didn't have the experience to appreciate that first time!

^^^^

You definitely need to go back. I told some coworkers that you could spend 4 hours in there but you'd still need to go back because of the sheer volume and craftsmanship. I know I hit cranium overload. I'm fortunate in that I live relatively close by. Plus I can knock out some range time while I'm there.

I'm a member and shoot at the NRA range often. For some reason I've yet to do the museum tour. Need to jump on that soon. It is a good range.
