I think everyone got of on tangents here. it isn't that Apple is going to become involved in gun control, this was about the idea of the technology and how it will become very pervasive in our society at which point more people will be likely to accept it for many solutions, right or wrong.

Every time someone goes on a rampage as they just did, more and more people who opposed gun controls will find them acceptable, again, right or wrong. Fingerprint readers on guns while not preventing anything really, will be seen as a benign was to "help" because we have become a nation of do anything even if it doesn't help just so we can claim we tried.

As for going into your house to implement some security control system on your existing firearms, no one will have to go into your house, you just won't be able to leave your house with your guns because then you will eventually be labled a criminal. You're going to shoot it out? Good luck.

All reasons why I will continue to vote Conservative at each and every election.

I would say that if someone wrestles you to the ground and disarms you and then can't fire the gun, you're probably going to be on the bad side of things regardless, you are already losing the battle.

Personally, I think trying to put an electronic security function into a mechanical device like a firearm is a bad idea. At some point the technology might become so reliable that there is little hesitation to use it for firearms safety but I don't think we're there yet.

I do see more efforts to require some similar means being required and the Apple system being used as a poster child sort of thing. If millions of people that buy those phones don't run into significant problems with the fingerprint reader, gun control proponents will surely jump on.
Mechanical locks have been around for millennia, but I've read of those S&W internal locks failing...rendering the revolver inoperable.
