The Wal Mart 9mm can is WAY overpriced, even if you do get a nice .50 cal can in the deal. It comes out to almost .50 a round, with tax. The Winchester, Federal, and Remington ammo in their display case is less than .30 a round.

Where do y'all think is the best place to order a case of 5.56 or .223?

This place has them for .28 a round, They are the steel case tula, but thats about what walmart sells them for. Walmart comes to 28.8 a round after tax. Add in that you can only buy 3 boxes at a time its better to buy these. IF you want brass then the price is more.

Palmetto State Armory
Luckygunner
SGAmmo
Aim Surplus
Ammunitiontogo
MidwayUSA
Brownells

Wal-mart also stocks cases of .223 now, if you REALLY need it and can't wait.

There is also an AR-15 related forum that has a large for sale/trade section. I would go there first since there's usually a lot of variety to choose from, at fair prices. Got 500 .308 (brass cased) for $300 shipped off of the ammunition subforum.

Sucks that some places still have a three box limit. As I've said before, I can buy as much as I want as long as the SG dept. is open.

GunBot 223 rifle ammo
GunBot 556 rifle ammo

For best results change sort order to "price per round" and check "View in-stock only" box.

Steel case & bi-metal bullets (lead core, steel jacket, thin copper coating to prevent rust) are cheaper, but steel case can't be reloaded and bi-metal bullets will eventually eat up your barrel. But that only affects you if you reload and if you shoot A LOT. As in many thousands of steel rounds to wear out a barrel. And then the savings over thousands of rounds of ammo will more than offset the price of a new barrel, so if you don't reload there's no reason to not shoot steel.

This study (http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/bras...el-cased-ammo/) is the best one I've seen on brass-vs-steel cases and copper-vs-bimetal jackets. They took 4 identical rifles and shot 10,000 rounds through each using one of four types of ammo.

They wore the hell out of those barrels even faster because they were shooting them near constantly to do that, I think. Ostensibly, one could make a barrel last a lot longer if you're using regular brass cased/copper jacketed ammunition.

I think Bravo Company Manufacturing has an AR they dubbed "Old Filthy" that they've shot something like 40k rounds through.

Edit: Found Filthy 14.

Just a heads up. I picked up a box of Federal 525 value pack one a day, and ten boxes of 50 Federal at Natchez shooters. It was $67 shipped for 1025 rounds. a bit over 6.5 cents a round shipped. They had 3000 boxes when I called but the sales man said that it was sinking fast.

I have heard that, but never actually talked to anyone who wore a barrel out. I have shot a lot of 7.62 steel and never had a problem. Never have I seen an AK or SKS wear out either.

Yeh, other parts will likely break before you even manage to wear the barrel out. That likely goes double for the barrels they make now that are lined doubly thick with chrome and made out of machine gun barrel blanks. (I think you can get those from BCM, Spike's, custom shops, etc.)
