Has anyone ever had message-style engraving done on a gun? We have a person retiring in our office and as a retirement gift we were thinking about a handgun with an engraving on it, saying something to the effect of "Happy retirement, NAME 1994-2014" (something along those lines anyway).

Is it difficult to have done? Aside from the cost of the gun, what kind of price would we be looking at? What about the time it takes to complete the work? I've looked online a bit but all I can find are engravers who do stylized art, not personalized messages.

Several years ago while living in Flagstaff , AZ there was an engraver living there that engraved the stamping wheels for belt company, on the side he did long rifle's and hand guns his work was beautiful and all hand done .... I would suggest going to the Flagstaff , AZ site and ask there. Good luck.

OP, if you know what type/brand you were thinking of as the gift (ie Smith & Wesson, etc) one of the forums dedicated to those lines may be of help as well. Most of those forums i've been on have a wide range of threads and info and you could get lucky finding someone in your backyard who can do this for you.

BTW, that's a very cool retirement gift. Helluva lot more fun then a watch lol.

Last year, my son-in-law took my daughters .257 Roberts down and had it engraved, as an aniversary present. The actual engraving was about $100 but there was quite a bit to it. He had the ivorys out of every deer and every elk she's shot, embedded in the stock. Not only does the metal on the rifle have engraving, but there is a little plate next to each ivory that gives the date. 7 bull elk, 7 buck deer. All total, it cost him about $300. but it's beautiful. Thick poly coating over the stock, looks like it's glass.

For my Dad's 70th birthday in 1981, my two brothers & I gave him a new blued Colt Single Action Army .45 (7.5" barrel) revolver (a "Matt Dillon" gun).

I had the backstrap engraved with his military ID number and a little brass plaque engraved with the message, "Presented to Carter ------ By His Three Sons - 1981". The plaque was attached to the lid of a beautiful Missouri Walnut felt-lined case that our oldest brother made.

I removed the Colt's backstrap to take it to the trophy shop engraver. No sense in risking the rest of the revolver.

Dad was extremely moved when we presented it to him. Mom too. It was one of his treasured possessions until he passed away at age 90.

These guys are supposed to be good.

Custom Firearm Engraving

The only thing I have engraved are some automatic knives with my ID number and first initial and last name. They were laser etched on the blade.

I object to cutting sharp edged stress risers in a highly stressed gun no matter how beautiful.

Actual tool engraving is artisanship. Artisan work is generally exceptionally expensive and takes an extremely long time and there are very few people that are "top hands" and only one that is the best. A better option would be to find a laser engraving shop. Depending on the job and the handgun, you're probably looking at about $100.
