I give up. I've been out of the gun scene since 2012 and used to do a lot of shooting then. I had about 5,000 rounds of .22LR which I sold last year to get some needed cash. I was looking at picking up some and shooting again, and there is still a massive shortage of trying to find any ammo at reasonable prices.
Before I could pick up a box of 500 .22LR at walmart for $20 then have fun the whole day. Now it's always sold out.
In fact, the only ammo I see not constantly being sold out is shotgun ammo.
I think it varies from place to place. It is still extremely hard for me to find 22LR and 9MM. I think it is a common caliber, and its cheap, so people gobble it up. I thought it would have leveled out after the whole scare last year.
I was talking to a gun dealer in Virginia the other day. She told me her industry rep told her that they are still trying to fill some very large orders for the federal government that is being shipped overseas. Even though the military weapons do not include .22lr the government is still buying enormous quantities of it.
Profit margin per round? Manufacturers are putting their resources toward cartridges that bring the highest rate of return. At least that's my thoughts on it.
There's plenty of .22lr available if you're willing to buy online. It's not as cheap as it used to be, but it's still half the cost or less of most centerfire ammo. So even at the inflated prices you find out there, it's still a great value for recreational shooting.
b) flipping; a number of individuals buy up all of a retail establishment's 22LR and then sell it at inflated prices on line and at local flea markets. This has been going on for at least the past year and will continue until folks stop buying from them.
There are a lot of mixed thoughts on this one. What one man calls "hoarding" another calls "stock piling." I don't even know if I recognize a distinction between the two, save one term carries negative or derogatory associations and the other sounds prudent. What's the difference? Does it depend on how many rounds someone has sitting in a dark closet? Is having 5,000 rounds hoarding if you only have 1 gun that shoots .22lr? Is 15,000 rounds "stock piling" if you have 5 or 6 guns that shoot .22lr?
I think that is a fair question. What is the difference?

Now this I agree is a major issue. I've had this discussion both her and with my younger brother. I think "flipping" is unethical, though I recognize its legality. I think it's a low-class person who will go into a store and buy the entire stock with the intent of marking it up and reselling at a higher price. I agree with you that people should stop buying from these guys so the artificial market demand will dry up. Good luck with that, though.
On the other hand, I am not opposed to incidental sales. If I have box sitting unused and by chance someone offers a fair price for it, fair game. I don't object to a transaction like this, it's just like selling any other piece of property. It's buying with the explicit intent of drying up the primary market and marking up on the secondary market where I object.
Probably a government experiment of gun control by controlling ammo availability. Without regular supply of ammo our ability to practice is diminished and our guns are good for use as clubs!
For me the last couple weeks has been lean on .22lr. I usually pick up 1500 to 2000 rounds a week. I keep 20,000 rounds in surplus but we fire at least 1000 a weekend.
