I have a friend that is willing to sell me a 4 bore breech loading double rifle with an ivory front sight and gold engraving on the rifle. the barrels sound good when hanging and tapped, and the stock is about 95% with just a repair that looks really old.
does anyone know anything about the 4 bore? I like the rifle, but do not want to pay out $26,000 without knowing a bit more about it. looks to be made by H&H but not sure, as only 1 H is visible with the rest rubbed off. there is a date of 1886 on it, which makes it legal to own without government paperwork, as it is considered not a firearm. just so you know, it does look like it was made in the 1880's

heck, I do not even know if it is worth that much.

anyone have any info or know anything about it?
anyone know if the rifle would be worth 26k?

H&H mark "Holland & Holland" not normally H&H so be very wary, certainly in the earlier years this was the case, earlier than around 1850 the mark read "H. Holland".

Here's a pic...

So if the barrel is saying H&H and there isn't any other engraving around the trigger, on the receiver or otherwise saying "Holland & Holland" it's not an H&H and probably isn't worth the asking price. If there is "Holland and Holland" on the receiver, the barrels must have been replaced, so it's not stock and probably not worth the asking price.
