Picked this up on fox news.com. Seems the M9 has some popularity issues with the troops. They are considering bumping calibers as well either 40 or back to 45. Terminal performance of the 9mm, reliability and durability issues are plauging the M9s service record also, it was stated .

The trials should be interesting. I imagine competition will be rather....stiff. lol

since the military only fires ball ammo in wartime, then they should just go back to the .45 ACP 1911A1 or some variant of it.

Ahhh...this wass the caveat. They seem to be most interested in ugly Tupperware guns. For general military applications, a Glock 21 45 would do nicely. That said, I'm old school, and use a good old single stack 1911 , personally. I don't like Glocks and other freezer storage bags. Lol, but, I can't fault their service record , durability and simplicity. Plus, in a war zone, 15 45s in a tough reliable package would be somewhat....comforting.

9mm is best for this application. The military will always demand a physical safety (thumb). Competition will be limited. 357SIG is too $$$. .45ACP isn't NATO, and offers no real advantage over 9mm while offering less capacity by far. .40 is just a solution to a problem noone really ever had, and the FBI is dumping it for the 9mm, anyway, who it was made because of when they downloaded their 10mm as it allowed identical ballistics from a smaller frame weapon.

No, the 9mm is here to stay and for good reason. The M9? Anyone's guess, but they sure are still buying a lot of 'em!

I think this will get interesting. As far as the 45 and NATO, screw NATO. Personally, I would never have dropped the 45. The 9mm has its niche. Its been around longer than the 45, but I think the 45 has it, hands down, as a sidearm cartridge. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the 9mm be the choice. To much placating of Europe there. Truly, they have bought a lot of M9s. The article said the took delivery of 100000 units in 2012.

I prefer a 45 and 40 over the 9mm. That being stated an all around, everyday, personal handgun self defense round hasn't been invented that is ubiquitously superior to the 9mm.

From a combat perspective the military should have gone to the Glock17 20 years ago.

I agree. The Glock is quite superior to the M9. I believe that both Naval and Air Force fighter pilots are given Glocks. Space and weight count. Hard to beat a Glock there.

the military wont ever use the +2 magazine extender. the Glock-21 only holds 13 rounds.
I would not mind the Glock-21 either, and I have several, or some other variant just chambered in .45 ACP.

the .40 is only around because the feds got their asses handed to them in Miami and blamed it all on the firearms they had instead of blaming themselves.

they should have all been fired and the .40 should have never come to being.

Many weapons and calibers have been developed over the course of firearm history because of events that spurred their innovation.

The .40cal has a place as well nothing wrong with that.

Look at all the many .30cal rifle and pistol variants.
