I used to be very against lasers, and then took a course with a low-light module that convinced me that while they DO NOT replace sights, they are a useful tool in the bag. Get a light, though, too. You have no business shooting what you can't see.

The TLR3 is a good, inexpensive option, have one on my SP2022 in the nightstand.
I have had two hand guns at one point that had the Crimson Trace lasers on them, they work great, they will not replace your Iron sights, but they are a great training tool, when you practice dry firing the weapon, you can see how much the weapon will move at a distance when you pull the trigger, you can see it will move without practice almost 2 inches. With practice you can cut that way down.
Lasers are also good for once you have it set were you want to shoot, and at what distance it is set for, when you fire the weapon you are no longer looking down the sights trying to line up your iron sights with the laser, you are looking down range at the target, and when you see the dot on the target where you like it, that is when you would shoot.
Lasers can give you a big advantage in house lighting and low light conditions, but during the day outside, they will be very hard to see; and as explained they will give away your position.
Good Luck with your new purchase, and enjoy the laser sights.

Streamlight makes good gear, but I am in the Surefire camp. Some of my gear I bought, some of it is T&E equipment from Surefire, but all of it is, and will be, Surefire (not only because of the T&E stuff, I LOVE TIR systems, and the new one's are amazing).
A good quality set of tritium night sights are a much better bet.
An M&P9F that I traded for has the new Trijicon HD sights. I love them!
