Been hunting for 4 days. My male has been awesome. Running big, fast, pointing birds and retrieving from land and water. Great times!

Schnitzel the wonder dog ran this rooster down, scooped him up and brought him to me- shot not required. Got another 'traditional style' a minute later. Letting the dogs rest til lunch time..

So last rooster of the day was a melanastic mutant.

Dark plumage compared to a ring neck. I spied him in wheat stubble and he took off 100 or so yards to some CRP. I hustled Schnitzel over there and he points him in less than 2 minutes.

What a GREAT damn dog. I'm mounting this one for him.

Default Duck Season Starts in Three Hours:

All of our ponds are flooded up for the opener. Hopefully we'll kill more than just mosquitoes this morning!

Dressed the blind and put the dekes out. The refuge had quite a few Spoonies sitting on it...I don't even waste a shell on them, especially since there are so many sewage treatment ponds in the area (their favorite haunt).

Wish me luck,

Jeff

Went out and sat in a blind in the woods for awhile this morning. Froze my tail off and when I finally got up to leave about 10:30....I see a doe run off. She was behind me. Hate that! At least I saw one though...I haven't seen a deer while hunting in a few weeks.

You know what'a funny? Last year I kinda splurged and bought a lightly used Browning Featherlight Citori- 12ga. New that's a $1400 gun, easy. Fancy wood, O/U- supposedly a fine gun and classic shooter.

I shot 2 birds with it. I missed 6. 4 of those shots were gimme shots. Tuesday I literally threw the gun down after missing 4 consecutive roosters. All of them were pointed by Schnitzel. I went back to my old $250 Mossberg 500 pump. I did not miss another bird.

Guess what? I'm gonna be going to the dance with what brought me from now on. I don't care if it's bulky or heavy- I rarely miss with that gun.

Anyone want a Browning Citori?

Me! Me!

I'd love to see Schnitzel at work. Sounds like a great dog. I love watching a good dog work. It's a think of beauty.
