The new 9 year old girl with the micro UZI accident is bringing the antis all out of the woodwork and challenging anyone who lets minors fire weapons. They don't think anyone under 18 is qualified or should be able to shoot or learn to shoot. That's sad, because I was brought up at an early age to shoot.
Let's prove 'em wrong.
So what was it and how old were you?
I'll go first........
Me : Age 5 Colt Detective Special 6-shot .38 special revolver.
My Dad had been kinda hinting around to the idea he was going to let me try something. Of course my Mom was unaware of any of it. One day he slipped that .38 in his back pocket and came and got me to go for a walk out in the woods with him where my Mom couldn't see what was going on. He used a snubnose because that's all he could easily hide and get out of the house with in a hurry.
I don't remember, maybe 3 or so. Likely a .22. I do remember doing it and the car hood we used as a dead rest. The car was a '58 Ford wagon and my dad had just gotten it into the dealership he was part owner of.
I was nineteen, and the occasion was a rifle class I took to partially satisfy a Phys Ed requirement at Penn State.
I deal with a severe spinal curvature which has left my entire body "out of plumb", so I know I'll never be a good shot. But I grew up in a rural area, and understand (and respect) why the ownership and responsible familiarity with firearms is as important a part of the American heritage as is a healthy suspicion toward Big Brother/Sister.

7 years old, Springfield .22 with iron sights. At a 50' outdoor range, received some instruction from Dad before he had me take an NRA hunter safety training class from Col Roscoe Arnett, Army retired (where I repeated the classes every year for the next 5 years). We used to go shoot rabbits at a friend's Avocado orchard; the rabbits were pests and there was a tularemia outbreak in the area for years with a bounty on the rabbits to encourage thinning the population. We used to try to get as close to 50 rabbits as we could get per box of 50 .22 rounds. Did this for years with Dad, then when I got my driver's license could head on out to the orchard and nearby ranches with a HS buddy. By then, we were both in Army JrROTC and were shooting on the rifle team, practicing 3-4 days per week at the HS 50' indoor range.
I'm getting questions on the chimp and the full auto AK. Those guys foolishly underestimated our closest relative. Not only was he smart enough to figure it out, he also was able to control it and not drop it. I was interested in showing that his intelligence and abilities probably aren't that different from a child.
It CAN be done.......

I can't remember the first gun I fired. I remember going to ranges as a kid, but my dad didn't own a gun of his own until I was about 13 or 14. His gun, a Remington 7600, is the first gun I REMEMBER shooting. It is a .30-06.
