I am new to hunting, but I am looking to buy a versatile shot gun. I want a gun that I can use for rabbits, yotes, and deer. Many people said a Mossberg 500 would be my best option, but there are so many options. Any thoughts?
Theire great. Swap the cheap plastic trigger group for one. Made for the 590 along with the metal safety switch and you're good to go. The plastic trigger groups break.
You could go with the Mossberg, or you could get a Remington 870, although I have heard Remington's quality has slipped in recent years. I have an 870 from about 10 years ago, no complaints.
But there are 12 types of Mossberg 500's and I have no idea what's the difference.
The 500 model is the the basic action. That action, attached to different style of barrel, pistol grip, etc, can be adapted to several different purposes. That's why the differences. This is the same for the Remington 870, another solid entry-level shotgun. I bought one in the fall of 2012 and love it. I also have a 500 that I bought in 1998 (my first gun) and love it, too.
I have an older Mossy 500 with three barrels, a 26" smoothbore for goose and duck, a rifled slug for deer and a shorty for home defense. It's a a solid shotgun. It does not like Remington Hyper loads AT ALL. It refuses to let loose of them in the chamber.
Good shotgun. You don't need the pistol grip and all that bull**** rail and crap that some of the GI Joe's like. Just load it with your favorite load and shoot.
Just in the past 2 years it's harvested at least 3 whitetails, over 100 geese, aprox. 50 ducks, aprox. 20 pheasants, maybe 10 grouse and several poor unassuming vegetables and cans at the range with that platform. I paid $200 for the shotgun, maybe $200 for the extra barrels and I've had innumerable amounts of fun with it.

Reason: language
I would go with the combo (two barrels). However I would look around for a used one. I bought mine for $200 on a consignment sale. It's an older 500, but frankly much nicer than their newer plastic stock versions.
What's the purpose of the gun? Self defense, hunting skeet? The nice thing about Mossberg is you buy a 5 shot you can pretty much buy different barrels and have a gun that can function in different roles
