After viewing the events in Furgusen and now Baltimore I have come to the conclusion that a high capacity home defense weapon should be on my shopping list. Handguns are covered, would a shotgun be the logical choice. If so, what do you guys like?

Not really. Shotguns provide slow follow-up shots, low level of precision, and are slow to reload and low capacity. Get an M4 type weapon is my advice.

This AK style shotgun might come in handy.

I have a Benneli M3 semiauto shotgun but as has been mentioned reloading would be a bit slow. I don't think I am at risk for rioting in my area though so I'm not worried.

I disagree. A shotgun would be my gun of choice for a few reasons.

You don't have to have perfect aim with a shotgun. The shot will spread out and you will have a better chance of hitting your target.

A shotgun shot won't go through multiple walls and cause unintended damage to someone else.

The sound of chambering a shell in a pump shotgun is enough to scare people sometimes.

The problem with a shotgun is the OP listed "high capacity" as a requirement. Unless you get a Saiga like the picture posted by Wartrace, shotguns do not have high capacity. It's possible the OP meant to say "high power".

Typical shotgun spread is 1" per yard or less for buckshot using a short cylinder bore barrel (typical home defense shotgun). So shooting across a 15-ft room would give you about a 5" circle or less. Unless the OP is shooting across a massive indoor room, aiming is still a requirement.

Penetration is penetration. If you are using birdshot, then the shot won't go through much more than one interior wall (double gyp-board). Neither will it go into a bad guy enough to put him down. It will cause massive pain, but it will not stop a determined attacker. If you go up in shot size enough to actually stop an attacker (#4 buck for close range without the risk of heavy clothing; #2 or #1 for other... no need for #00 unless you are shooting extreme long ranges in a war zone) your shots will likewise penetrate through multiple interior walls.

I certainly would never consider the intimidation effect on a criminal! If they are to encounter my weapon it's because they're being shot...We aren't cops, we don't do standoffs or intimidation...we protect or retreat.

As an average citizen, if you pull your gun on someone and don't fire then perhaps you aren't properly trained or maybe shouldn't have a gun at all until you mature a bit.
