If you spend any time tinkering w/ and reading about guns sooner or later you will run across the term 'ballistic nylon.' Here is a random example:

BALLISTIC NYLON DUTY BELT - available from DeSantis Holster

"Ballistic nylon" has been around for probably 20 years at least, and is a very popular material for gun holsters in particular. It appears to have now migrated to the smart phone world as well:

Merriam Webster defines ballistics as ": the science that studies the movement of objects (such as bullets or rockets) that are shot or forced to move forward through the air." Another way to put it is that ballistics is the study of projectiles. What then is 'ballistic nylon?' I suppose it would be a bit of nylon fabric that you grab and throw into the air. I threw a holster into the air, where it landed, I know not where.

It's used a lot in motorcycle protective wear, jackets, pants and gloves, in place of leather. It's lighter and can be waterproofed or made as a mesh for more airflow on a hot day, and is a lot less expensive for production than leather. One caveat is that if you do suffer a crash the stuff is pretty much a one shot deal and you'll need new gear, BUT, it most probably will still be cheaper than going with leather in the first place.

It is a synthetic nylon fabric used for a variety of applications like jackets, pants and gloves, in place of leather. The original intended purpose was for protecting aircraft personnel from shrapnel and bullets.
