Yes, like others, I'm thinking what I should have in my safe in the near future.

So I am thinking about upper halves but really, I don't know that much about them.

Such as can they be bought without going through an FFL?

Will an upper made by one company fit, work with the lower of another company?

And my biggest problem? Finding them with just the standard carry handle. I'm simple, I don't need rails, think the post is insane, want them with hand guards, post sights and a sling.

So what can the hive mind tell me?

Assuming you're talking about the AR-15? Only the lower is an FFL item, all other parts are buy outright. If you go the 80% route even the lower isn't an FFL item. AFAIK all in spec uppers will fit any in spec lower, I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong, not an expert by any means.

Thank you for answering that question.

Anyone on the others? Such as would a Windham upper work on a Rock River lower?

Well, you did say you weren't an expert, so please, others chime in. $600+ is a heap of a lot of cash to be unsure on.

They MIGHT fit. There are usually fitting issues. Not always but usually. Generally the issue is the pins not quite lined up.

Mmmmm, pins not lining up isn't good.

Equally, I have an Armalite AR-10 in the question as well......so I guess there is the same line of "maybe" there as well..................

...........................to say nothing about mating Armatlite with anything but Armalite.

Its actually better if they dont exactly line up.Then you can hone the pin hole in the lower to fit snugly. Then you dont have a rattling upper.

I just built an 80%. no fitment issues. The rear pin is tight and needs to be tapped in and out. As long as everything is "milspec" it will fit without issues.

total cost was just under $600 without the shipping.

I highly recommend an armorer's wrench, a vice block, and a couple of roll pin punches to get everything installed.
