I packed my gear last night: Predator compound bow, five broadheads, mini-Mag, Leatherman, water, rangefinder, etc. Laid out my camo pants, hat, gloves etc. on the sofa. Plan was to get up around 5, be at the hunting ground by 5:30 (sunrise is 6:32am).
But I woke up with a headache this morning and just couldn't get going. I feel like a jerk; it's a crystal clear 35º outside. Will try again tomorrow. The weather should be about the same. Wednesday is predicted rain, then it's the holiday weekend.
Deer and elk are winding down here.. only a week left. My zone allows hunting til Jan 31, but my freezer is full of venison. My attention shall now shift to field hunting ducks and geese, oh baby....
I’m pretty much done myself. Taking a few new hunters out on Friday then I am probably finished. I filled three tags this year, more than enough meat to get me through to next season. I’m extremely grateful for how this season turned out.
On #3 I finally can say I took a deer with a bullet I made, gutted, dragged, skinned, quartered and butchered it. I’ve never butchered a deer myself before.
I've done all of my butchering for at least 20 years- it's work but it's good work. One of the most valuable tools I ever had was a book called "Basic Butchering of Livestock and Game", written by an old veterinarian. It's got some bent pages and blood stains, lol. Really helpful book.
Yeah next time my book with be right next to me. I regret never doing this with my grandfather while he was still alive. He was a union butcher for 40+ years.
Finally some decent goose weather blows in. 6-10" snow on the ground, -10 this morning- perfect goose hunting weather!
