One supersonic round fired inside a building can deafen a person for several hours and may actually cause permanent hearing loss. Try it if you don't believe me.
For hearing protection you can keep muffs on the bedside table, but doesn't help with muzzle flash

Exactly why my home defense rifle is a 9mm SBR with a suppressor, loaded with Hornady 147gr XTP.
I don't have any neighbors within range, so I am unconcerned with overpenetration.

A SMG is not as loud as a handgun since there is generally complete combustion before the projectile leaves the barrel. Muzzle blast (the noise component that a suppressor can almost eliminate) is caused primarily by powder burning beyond the muzzle.
Home defense I'd get a pump action 12 gauge in a "combat" or "riot" configuration with bird shot. A high powered rifle like an AR or AK is overkill at those ranges and you'd be shooting holes in the wall on the other side of the guy.
Yes, I do prefer using my AR15 if and only if I can obtain proven ammo that will not penetrate through multiple sheetrock and exit the house (brick outside or even the window) and harm the neighbor. The intruder will leave or get shot multiple times, but I don't want to risk harming my neighbor.
For the shotgun, I am researching and seeing youtube that I can get good damage and less penetration through walls.
Now, I can start out defending myself and family with the shotgun, and then go the AR15 if more intruders are there. But as of now, i am not sure AR15 is a good option for home defense (for neighbors sake), I am still researching and evaluating our strategy plan. Maybe I can position myself where if I miss the target, what I is behind him or her is lots of sheetrock to penetrates.
Are you going to shoot ammo with rubber bullets on your AR-15?
As another poster mentioned, a shotgun is one of the best self-defense weapons inside a home. But if you want to shoot outside the home, the AR-15 should be fine as long as you don't use rubber bullets or blanks.
It has been taught for years that for home defense, specially if you have family members, a shotgun loaded with bird shot is an outstanding choice for home defense (inside your home, of course). Bird shot at a distance won't penetrate sheetrock walls all the way through, but don't forget that 10-20 feet away, it can create a huge hole though a person, or even go though a wall.
If you don't have any neighbors nearby, nor family member at your home, then use a 9mm-.45 ACP (whatever you want). A suppressor on a pistol is good, specially if you are a hit man and want not to be noticed, but at home the blast from a gun would scare an intruder a lot faster. If fact, racking a shotgun round in the chamber would probably send the intruder running out of there before you can take a shot.
I would never own an AR-15. Inside the home I keep a 1911 pistol and a shotgun handy. If I need something long range I keep a couple of m1a rifles in the gun safe.
