Good luck to everyone and a safe season to all!

I went grouse hunting over Labor Day, heading out later this week for pheasant. Going mule deer hunting in 3 weeks, and again in November.

Archery is already open, but I like to wait until the rut/cold weather for big game.

Antelope opens this weekend, but I didn't put in the drawing for the tags. Archery season is open, I went out once for elk, couldn't get close enough but saw 2 good bulls.
Lots of deer, antelope, turkeys around, elk are pretty scattered but a couple good snowfalls should bring them together, and once there's 2 feet of snow in the high country they start moving lower.

We've had some cold weather move in already, some light snow in the high country. Could be an excellent season when rifle opens in a couple weeks.

Total bust. The moon was high and bright overnight into Monday, so they were probably out eating all night. In an area overrun with deer, we saw 2 once it was time to be out there. Oh well. Plenty of time to go!

I was in a tree stand yesterday for opening day. About 2 pm as I was climbing down I got a phone call. A friend of a friend had a deer that had been attacked by the neighbor's dogs and the game warden told him to put it down. So, after confirming with game warden myself, I went and used the 9 mm to put the poor thing out of her misery. It was very sad to see, and the owner of the dogs needs to control his animals.

Well our little spot of bird heaven was a bust. I only bagged 3 roosters in 3 days, and boy is that horrible. 3 years ago it was common to see groups of 20-30 birds getting bounced, found, pointed and flushed. We saw 1-2 birds in a spot total.

It was like a ghost town.

And more eerily we saw NO songbirds, red wing blackbirds, crows, ducks or geese. That place got hammered.
