Recoil is much milder than a shotgun's. Besides, they're fun.

Prior to buying it, I did compare it with the 870 but I find the 870 is significantly heavier. As to the recoil, it's more like a push rather than a muzzle flip. It's very manageable with a correct stance.

I chose a pump shotgun for reliability. In my research, I find the semi-auto is more picky about the ammo you feed. Also, a pump is not much slower to operate than a semi-auto when doing it right
Shotguns are too big to use in a house or other close quarters

For first time buyers - the Chevrolet of shotguns - Mossberg 500.
Start out with light loads to learn how to handle the gun.

That is the correct way to clear & reload a new round, btw. By kneeling down and slam the butt of shotgun on the ground, you reduce your silhouette as a target while able quickly recover and get back into the fight.

LOL, what if you're not Chevy fan?

So, I do have a bias against Mossberg, way back in 1984ish, I had the Model 500 in .410.....I was hunting and it was a cold day, I shot at a Squirrel (running on the ground), missed and when I went to make my second shot the barrel hit a tree and the barrel fell off. The screw lug that attaches the barrel to the gun, where the lug attaches to the barrel failed.

Not a Chevy fan??? Are you even an American???

I too have a bias against Mossberg. Back in early 80s while in college in Wisconsin, I went with my roommate to go deer hunting. He loaned me a Mossberg 500 loaded with deer slugs. When the daylight break, I heard stomping sound then looked up, I saw a deer in the size of a horse flying in mid-air. The deer and I made eye-contact, so when it landed it took off in a 90 degree direction. By the time I picked my jaws off the floor, it was 50 yards away. Then I remembered to shoot, so I pointed the shotgun at the deer and pulled the trigger --- nothing. I pulled the trigger again and ---- nothing.

I had forgotten to disable the safety....
