We went to Lytle Creek, a popular shooting area, where I tried out some hardware. I'd been in the army, and my basic training cycle was the last cycle to train with the M14 in June, 1968. That is a very effective rifle for what it was designed for, troops on open fields, like Europe. I got to shoot a .357 revolver and it felt good in the hand. I have large hands and wear a XX Large motorcycle glove, so the big revolver felt right. California was going thru a series of earthquakes at the time, nothing dramatic, just minor temblors, but everyone was talking about roving bands of outlaws stealing your food and water, so everyone was arming up. I bought a Colt Model 13 .357 and a Mossberg short-barrel .20 pump shotgun for the Mrs.
I used to work with a guy, a former LRP sniper and Arizona State Trooper, who was also a licensed gun dealer, and on his advice I bought a Taurus 13-round .380 semi-auto pistol for a really good price. At the time, my stepdaughter was driving back and forth from Southern CA to Sacramento a lot for school, and her Dad have given her a crappy little Iver-Johnson .22. I got her a 5-shot .38 Special revolver for her small hands, and she kept it for some years, but after she graduated and wasn't making than drive anymore, and her significant other not a fan of guns, she gave it back to me. Wanting to teach my son to shoot, I got a Winchester .22 rifle. He liked it, and has quite a collection of hardware now, too. Should the next apocalypse happen, I'm ready!
Colt doesn’t make a Model 13. But S&W does.

You are right. Tell you how long it's been since I fired it.

Ah, the stainless version would be a Model 65. The Model 13 is blued.

In either version, they are very cool revolvers. The 3” versions have quite a cult following, and command premium prices.

My Model 13 was 4”. Really nice gun, but gave it to my son 30 years ago when he got married.

Yeah, my .38 would be ideal in a 3” barrel. 4” just makes it too large to carry even in a winter coat (I’m not a big guy).

But as a pocket gun…I still wouldn’t call that a pocket gun. Maybe an air weight but those little suckers kinda need steel to keep even a .38 from being kinda crappy to shoot.

I still am not on that boat. I just bought a Glock 17 and I look at the bullets and there is absolutely no way they have the stopping power of a 45. I have no evidence to base my opinion on other than the power coming out the gun itself but if you want to stop someone immediately a 45 is substantially better than a 9mm even with bullet tech. I read about it online and respect your firearms knowledge more than my own but if I had one shot out of a handgun to take down a threat there is no question I would want that to be a 45.
