I have a Sig Sauer P229. It's a 9mm. I like the way it feels in my hand. Maybe you don't need a 38 or 357. If you go to some gun shops - you can get a pre-owned gun. Mine was once owned by a cop... I like that.
Very cool that you have attended the BWB camps! I wanted to attend their camp in IA last year at Brownell's but could not fit it in my schedule. Hopefully they will have another one there in 2010.
The BOW programs (becoming an outdoor woman) in many states have basic rifle and pistol classes. Look also for the NRA Women on Target programs. A number of nationally reputable firearms instructor will also offer "ladies only" courses.
If you are interested in target shooting, I'd suggest getting a .22 semi-auto like - Ruger Mk 2 or Mk3, S&W 22A, S&W Model 41, Beretta Neos, or Browning Buck Mark. All of these firearms are excellent pistols for target shooting for fun and accuracy. They do not have much recoil and they have nice light triggers for accurate shooting. If you want to be a little less formal, you might look at a Ruger Single-Six revolver for plinking. I've got one and I like it a lot. I do enjoy the 9mm guns and have 6. I just picked up the Baretta Neos .22 LR and it is so much fun. The .22 ammo is under $2.25 per 50 rounds and creates a lot of good fun for us wounded Vietnam Vets when the 6 of us go to the target range.
You are not going to get a sig or glock for under 400, Bersa or the clone by bersa firestorm is a good bet, and go for a 380 if you are looking for carry gun, I know people who have small winnies that buy big ol 45 and never carry because they are to massive. A colt 45 auto 1911A1 is a great gun, but hard to carry around without making one side of your body tilt. A good little walther type of 380 is not very noticible in a hand bag or shoulder holster and has the stopping power of about a 38 special. I have had many people throw up noses at 380 but they usualy drive hummers to make up for somehting they feel is missing in life, and one point I bring out is I would rather have a 380 on me when needed than a colt 45 in my dresser at home when needed.
that all depends on where you are, and proves a point that glocks are not as high priced as everyone claims. hell a new g30 can be had for 549, that's not a bad deal, but i did only pay 338 for my taurus pt111 brand new, that was a good gun too
