My ancient electric pressing comb is on its last legs—it's verging on being unsafe to use, so I really need to replace it immediately. I've already bought one replacement locally. It's labeled "up to 428 deg F", but it's not nearly hot enough to get my hair straight. This afternoon, I went to a local beauty supply store. They had another brand of comb in stock (labeled "up to 500 deg F"), but after letting it heat on its highest setting for 10 minutes or so it wasn't hot enough to the touch to make me confident it would work any better than my recent purchase, so I didn't buy it. I've had my old comb for so long that the packaging and all manufacturer's marks are long gone, so I can't look for the same brand. It doesn't have a temperature control on it, and the new combs I have tried so far do have them. I'm starting to suspect that the local suppliers will only have the same brands I've already tried, so I'm asking here. I've already checked out the reviews on Amazon and didn't see anything I wanted to buy.
If you press your own hair, or press other peoples' hair professionally, can you recommend an online source for a pressing comb that gets really hot? My hair is near shoulder-length, extremely thick, quite coarse and ultra-curly. My hair doesn't like chemical straighteners and neither do I!

This may seem like an incredibly stupid question to you... but why are you using an electric hot comb? I know its 2010 but the original hot comb that you set on a stove still works like a charm! If you want the comb really hot, and the settings dont go that high on an electric one, then thats one more reason to use the original. But to be honest, when using the original, you dont ever want the comb too hot... I dont know how old you are, but if you're around my age (20's) your best bet is to go ask an elder for tips. Should you decide to use a regular hot comb, you'll need to really know what youre doing so you dont burn your hair....Perhaps thats why you opt for the electric one... It may somehow be safer If you put a scorching stove heated comb on your hair, it will sizzle right then and there. Hope that helps...

You got it in one guess. I don't know how to tell if a stove-heated comb is too hot, and you can burn your hair right off if it is.
Sally's is the second store I went to. I don't remember which of the combs I tested in the store, but it was the hotter of the two brands they had available. I still haven't found a replacement yet.
Yeah was hoping that might be a good suggestion. I'm not a member myself, but I am a member of the LHC and Untamed Tresses. They are pretty good forums for getting advice on hair care so I'm sure the LHCF is as well.
I don't use a hot comb anymore, but I'd suggest you stay away from the Gold n Hot. I have that brand, and it really isn't very good.
