i have recently had 2 major surgeries and numerous tests that involved anesthesia and lots of medications. seems that i am losing my hair. it was thin to begin with but this is making me nuts. my hairdresser believes it is from all my body has gone through and will come back. my doctor did blood work to test my tyroid. has anyone else heard of this and any suggestions to restore other than a wig or hair transplants?

Your hairdresser is probably correct.
Stress can affect the growth cycle of your hair. Hair goes through a stage in which it grows, then one in which the the hair is resting. After some time in the resting phase, it falls out.
Stress, such as an illness, can cause more hair to enter the resting phase. It then falls out at the same time, which can cause the hair to be noticeably thinner. The falling out phase is called the "telogen phase" and this type of hair loss is called "telogen effluvium." The hair loss usually comes 6 weeks to 4 months after the illness.
The good news is that over time, the hair follicles get back to the normal pattern and the hair regrows. Because the hair growth cycle extends over several months, it may take a while --- maybe 6 months --- before you notice a difference. Meanwhile, ask your hairdresser to help you with a flattering style to make the most of what you have. I would avoid any harsh chemicals that might increase breakage.
I heard this very same thing. Mental stress and tension headaches from stress can cause you to lose hair. I would think its the same stuff that makes you go very gray as well like all the way around your head.
Losing hair runs in my family, I am lucky to not have lost any at 30. My dad got lucky, but he still got gray in his 30s or his temple area had all gray. I have very few gray hairs at 30.
I could have easily taken after my uncles, but thank god I didn't. I just have their personalities more instead.
I have had noticable thinning from stress in the past, the good news in my case is it grew back. I had a bout of alopecia, a quarter sized patch of hair loss, in college. I guess its a genetic reaction to stress, I had a grandmother who lost two people close to her in a few months and all her hair fell out.
My last bout of thinning was about 3 years ago, and my hair is now perfectly normal for me. If getting extensions or having fillers makes you feel better, I say go for it. I just changed my hairstyle a bit, but if its noticable I think there is so much that can be done these days you should do all you can to feel good and move on from your health problems emotionally . Hope the worst is over!
thanks everyone for the feedback. i'm still losing. hopefully it will start to grow back soon. i'm looking into organic shampoos so hopefully that will help. i did have a rapid weight loss...can anyone explain why the weight comes back so quickly but not the hair

I hear that hair growth is just slow. Also for shampoo, Johnson's baby shampoo -- don't think you need anything stronger than that unless you work in the kitchen or in and around dirt.
what about eating extra protein? or foods with iron?
