How can I have deeper waves?(Hair) (stylist, light, African)

Im an african american male who basically wants better hair. So far my waves look like this.


but I want them to look like this


As you can see the 2nd pic his wave are deeper and wider, how can I obtain that look.
So far I have 360 Style Pomade, a hard brush, and a couple of wave caps.
Any advice on how to get deeper and wider waves would help alot, thanks!

(I really have no idea, but) the guy in the 2nd pic looks like his hair is grown out longer on top.
