Yea, Head and Shoulders is absolutely awful for hair - I always try and steer people away from it. It's full of sulfates to create a 'lather' which are super drying for the hair and scalp, and it can strip away all your natural oils (and color) which can lead to weakness and fall out.
Switch to a sulfate-free shampoo as your number 1 step in the right direction. They can take a while to get used (no lather and you need to rinse and repeat) but your hair will thank you for it!
Also for helping prevent hair loss, you should be using products that help strengthen and protect, as well as encourage new hair growth. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid, beta-glucan and pea sprout extract which are all really effective.
