Every time I try to turn my hair blonde with over the counter hair color it ends up turning red. I am sure that is due to my grandfather being a Scotsman, but how do I stop my red roots from coming through?

I currently have dark brown hair thanks to my native american roots and want the blonde look but i just can't stop it from going red instead and it just drives me bonkers.

Anyone know of a good over the counter brand that helps keep it the right color and knock out the red?

Thanks.

"love you grandpa"

Well, why actually?
Red haired females, esp the natural ones, are rare. Very rare. You should show it off, instead of doing boilerplated "blond" standard.
very serious.

If your hair is naturally dark and you're going blonde, what you're using involves some sort of peroxide/ bleaching. It will often go brassy unless you also use a toner.

Dark brown/Native is cool, OP. Embrace who you are!

OK, you probably didn't want to hear that, but I couldn't help it. Dark brown is gorgeous. But if you really want to try blonde, have you gone to a hairdresser, to find out how they do it? See the salon owner, not recent hires, so you'll get someone with a lot of experience, and you can pick their brain, as well as get a good, professional job the first time.

Use an ash -cool- dye, and/or a purple toner. A toner's like $3 @ Sally's,, (then mix w/ developer.)

A purple shampoo/conditioner like Shimmer Lights can help, too.
