How do you tip for a $17 haircut ? I think that $20 is not enough because they are spending 30-40 minutes hair you only give $3? and $25 is too much so would $23 be perfect for that?

Mine cost $17, and I just give them a twenty. That's just under 18%, more than most people tip a waitress at an expensive restaurant.
I get my haircut at a Supercut-type place, $15! I LOVE the way my stylist cuts it, and always request her. I also always leave a $10 tip---I consider it insurance! Seriously, to leave a "percentage" tip would be about $1.50---$3.00, which is an insult! I figure I still walk away happy for $25 Beats the "fancy" salons, where I've paid $100+ to walk away pi$$ed
I spent $12 on a pair of whal clippers about 7 years ago and been cutting my own hair ever since. I use a mirror looking into a mirror behind me to cut the back of my head and around my ears. Typically I just do simple cuts like a 5 all over or a #2 buzz in the summer. At $17-20 per cut and once per month That's like $1500.
So about 5 months ago I decided to pay for a haircut. What a waste of $20. I was expecting some awesome style or something. Maybe I was expecting too much. Anyway I'm back to cutting my own hair again.
Depends how long I've needed to wait.. usually if they're not so busy, they need the money more and I end up waiting less so I tip them more (like $3+) for a win-win. If I end up waiting 30 min or more, it's a $1 tip unless they give an exceptional haircut.

30-40 minutes on a men's haircut is an awful long time.
I would start at $20.00 which is most like the norm. If you love the cut, like the stylist, if the stylist put in some extra time styling it for you, or you are having a good day then tip more.

I always tip $10.00...when I get a good cut...
