It was like a rat's nest, with flakes of who knows what flying all over me. Ugh.

Many women would just wrap toilet paper around their hairdos when sleeping, then spray again in the morning. By the time they came in for their appointment, their hair would be as hard as a helmet.

The absolute worst hairstyle period EVER.
This was an interesting post. Ballroom dancers do this for comps (get hair done so it doesn't move, sleep on it and compete again next day) but to think this was a regular thing of every day life... wow.

Though come to think of it, my MIL does something like what you describe, sans the daily hairspray application (AFAIK). She goes to the hairdresser once a week and it gets re-styled. It's a perm that looks like it was set with a helmet, i.e. the surface is actually smooth, the curls are "underneath" so to speak. Oh, and it's still dyed brown. I'm sporting more gray hair than she is, lol.

Re decades, I miss the 80's big hair. I was not able to participate since my mother forbade the use of hairspray, and this was before there was such a wide array of various hair products (gel, pommade, etc).

I'm a big non-fan of the current hairstyles that look choppy/messy/frizzed out. The 80's versions at least had some underlying structure/intent to them, the modern day versions look like the hairdresser has no training and just did whatever (thinking TV hosts, etc).

In the late 70's, I had the Farah Fawcett look. I, happily, had the hair for it. Thick, with lots of body, and a bit of wave and curl. I could hold layers like nobodies business. LOL
