I've noticed that back in the day (1960s and 1970s) it was hippies that had long hair and beards. How come these days it's the Proud Boys and alt right that have them. Is this fair assessment or just a coincidence?

beards are a fashion trend this days. Nothing to do with politics.

If you leave out race, most of any seeming difference in being bearded probably disappears. I think the right tends toward more unkempt beards, but that for now is 100% assertion.

Duck Dynasty has more to do with the shaggy beard look than directly with politics, but the DD men skew Republican
