What is the difference? And what would be a better idea? I'm a college student and I want a dirty blonde hair(shaggy) and I've always gotten highlights but am considering all over color. Is it worth it?

I do both, but the highlights are very subtle. However, I do dye my hair brown.

You're a dude...what the hell are you doing dyeing your hair?
shaggy hair....*drools*
Don't do the highlights dude. I'm a girl, and even I know you'll get made fun of. But, the hair...dont touch that hair...
Umm, what planet do you live on?
To the OP, if you want something done to your hair, but all means do it. If you have the confidence and the right person on your head, you'll have no problems. I've been coloring my hair since I was in high school and if I can walk around with colored hair in ALABAMA, you can too.
As a college student you should be focusing on your studies. Not trying to decide whether or not to highlight or dye your hair. If you want to stand out from the other college guys then shower frequently, brush and comb your hair daily, brush your teeth twice a day, shave your face daily, and dress in clean nice clothes. Doing all the above will get you noticed more than coloring your hair. Judging by the college students I see on my way to work, most of the guys don't do any of the above.
With color you will have to touch-up more often then highlights. Usually color is deposited on your new growth hair every 4-6 weeks where as highlights can be touched up every 8-12 weeks.. depending also on the growth of your hair & style.
It all depends on what looks good on you and how consistent you are with getting into the salon and getting your hair done and using the right products. Also consider the extra expense of color. You will go to the salon more often. Perhaps you can go for a consultation with your hair dresser, so they can give you a thumbs up or down. good luck
