Default Hair Color Question for Seasoned Stylists/Hairdressers:

My hair was platinum blonde as of September of lst year. Two weeks ago, I got sick of doing the roots every four weeks and opted to go red. I wanted to be a light copper but after three grueling processes, I am now a very drab chestnut. It was originally a rich chesnut brown but it has since faded. I had originally planned to put some blonde into the front but my hair was so dry and overprocessed afterwards that I didnt dare! Here's my question:

How long should I wait before adding a couple of blonde streaks and is there something I can put on the red to freshen it up every so often that WILL NOT add to the dryness of it??

I have colored my own hair for years, but I'm not a stylist. I'm still going to answer, though.
1. Use a protein filler before you apply any more color.
2. Use semi-permanent color to punch up your color.

Did you do your hair yourself? Next time I recommend going to an experienced colorist. You may need recommendations, since going to an expensive salon doesn't guarantee you'll get a quality job. Red-toned haircolors are complex and may require an experienced person. Obviously you want to do this yourself , but I have to recommend a professional to be responsible.

The other think I found in my years of dyeing is that permanent hair color is just lie. Some of them need to be freshened up because the color WILL fade. To keep a good color, you may need to get regular trims. I extend out my "touchups," to refresh the faded color in my hair, but that can be damaging and is probably not a good idea.

BTW, semi-permanent color washes out and can stain your clothing and pillows. So, it might be a good idea to have that done at a salon. I also use oil in my hair, so perhaps you won't have that problem. Many semi permanents claim not to damage your hair, but read carefully to make sure that it's compatible with your current color.

Thanks. I appreciate all of your advice. I did go to a salon to get the red but they really missed the mark this time. Funny, because when I went FROM red to platinum they did a great job! I was thinking about a semi-permanant color. What about manic panic? I know it comes off onpillow cases but it also claimed to be hydrating and GOOD for your hair. Also, since I'm not bleaching my hair out first, it shouldnt turn out too bright, should it? I've heard that if you don't leave it in very long, it just leaves a hint of the ultra bright color. I was considering trying an 'orange' based cream (didnt want to risk it looking pink or purple upon fading) like the 'flaming' or 'electric lava' colors on this page:

There is some sort of rule about color not lifting color and if you try to go lighter it doesn't work - particularly in relationship to adding the blonde in the front. I'm certainly not a stylist either. I forget the sn, but someone knew a lot about color. Maybe she will see this and respond. Good luck!

I like your hair in the picture. I don't know about manic panic. I've only seen it in funky colors that don't look very natural. I would recommend any professional semi-permanent. Just make sure you follow the directions and get any items you need for measuring etc.

Default Manic Panic

I'm a hairstylist of 20 years....Please don't use manic panic......I have read your posts & am trying to figure out exactly what you are trying to get to now??? Manic panic IS a semi-perm color, however generally you have to pre-lighten (bleach) the hair first then apply it. And, as far as I know it only comes in very vibrant colors.
You have to keep in mind what color you have on your hair right now, then what color you are adding on top of it.
If your color is actually red now, keep in mind it is the first color to leave your hair.....So, if you just shampoo it several times & give it a few days it will lighten substantially. If you really want a few highlights after that, make sure you have done some serious treatments of protein & moisture first. Then, have a professional check your hair to make sure it isn't going to completely break off when you apply more bleach...Hope that helps.

Have you ever used manic panic? The pro jacked it up...

If you want less pigment reduce it with conditioner. I use it without lightening all the time and it comes out like a glaze over my natural color of med/deep brown. Its not all harsh as pictured on the site. Not even close. It washes out. You can strip it all out in a night of shampoo train. If you are paranoid about color you should cut off a lock and bond it with a big blob of superglue. You can test dye & wash the manic panic and bleaching on it.

That's what I was thinking. If I use the bright reddish orange, it seemed like it would just brighten my dyed hair, not turn it orange. I saw a picture of a girl who used the 'vampire red' on black hair and it just turned it a dark burgundy. I do want to find something brilliantly hued so that it just doesnt turn brown again.
