Yeah I was thinking about Sisterlocks when I first cut off my perm too but the price to get them started and re-twisted is what kept me at bay. I may consider it later but I'm just enjoying my loose hair for now. I wear it in puffs, twistouts, braidouts, and if I want it straight I can just flat iron.
I think the thing is a lot of black women never saw wearing natural hair as an option unless it was locks or a short fro. I know I had no idea of the wide range of styles. Growing up, its like once you get a certain age you get a perm and that's it. That was the norm, irregardless of the damage and breakage you better slap on that perm as soon as a nap appears, LOL. So by seeing all those damaged heads of hair, its no wonder most of us would believe in the "Black women's hair doesn't grow" myth. But I'm getting too deep and that's a whole nother thread LOL
LOL That is what perpetuates the myth that the black woman can not grow long hair.......most of the time all people see are short damaged hair on black womens heads or black women wearing weaves. Lord if I could tell you how many times when I was wearing weaves and dating I was afraid to allow a man to touch my hair......for fear that he would notice the tracks!! For me it was just too much work trying to keep up with the illusion........running down to the beauty supply store buying perm kits and packs of weaving hair, then if the person at the salon does not put the weave in right that can cause hair breakage! Too much stuff to worry about.......now no worries, just have to keep it clean, conditioned and light moisterizer........after that it is just air dry.
Glad you are enjoying your hair loose......I bet you do some really creative styles with it. Yeah the Sisterlocks can be pricey to have done.......how I managed it was to save a little money at a time while I was growing out the perm.......worked out great.....by the time the perm grew out and my hair was the length I wanted I had enough money to have my locs done and it was not such a shock on my wallet! You are right there too......what used to stop me from even considering locking my hair was the fact that the traditional dreadlocks are thick and at that time I thought that would limit my styling options.......in recent years I learned that locks could be done smaller and therefore allow more versatility. Yeah there was always this rush to cover up the naps the minute they grew from the scalp.....had to hurry and straighten them out before someone saw them!
Here is the link to some videos that I love....don't know if you have seen them before but enjoy.
I've always noticed that these types of threads tend to get out of control. I remember there was a thread on Black Planet YEARRRRRRRRRRRRS ago that went on and on and on and on and on....the natural heads vs. the relaxer heads. Lots of name calling and all of that.
I don't have a problem with people who choose to go natural. What I have a problem with are the people who USED to get relaxers who suddenly become self-righteous when they decide to go natural. If YOU decide to go natural, well, then good for you, but don't choose to look down upon other people who still choose to relax.
And, the chemical in my body excuse crap, still til' this day, cracks me the hell up when it comes out of the mouths of natural heads. They used to use that a lot, in that thread I was talking about on Black Planet. There are chemicals you consume EVERY DAY. If you eat ANY type of meat, that's a chemical you're putting in your body, the spray they're using to spray the fruits and veggies in the super market, is another chemical you're putting in your body, the deodorant you use every day is another chemical you're putting in your body, the tooth paste you use every day is another chemical you're putting in your body, the air we breathe, every day, in some of our neighborhoods, are FILLED with chemicals....I mean, the list is endless, so please stop coming at relaxer heads with that excuse because its tired. Okay we get it. You don't want to put another chemical in YOUR body... My grandmother is pushing 80 and has been relaxing and eating pork for YEARS, and she's still alive and kickin'....when its your time to go, then its just your time to go.
Again this thread is not about you......or perming of your hair. If it does not apply then let it fly! My reasons for going natural and others reasons for going natural are not self righteous just that OUR REASONS! Seems that there are some other issues going on that have nothing to do with this thread........so you are on here trying to create controversy and disrupt the thread. Therefore what I am going to do is IGNORE all of your future posts on this thread.......I am an adult and I don't have time for childish people!

Thank you LMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My point exactly!!!!!!
I guess my take on this thread was that somehow I am not black enough or I am ashamed of who I am because I get relaxers...maybe I am wrong for taking it that way but that is the tone I read. In America cultures are constantly mixing and changing. I am not trying to be someone who I am not but I am not my hair so if I perm my hair or I wear an afro dont assume you know me or what I am about.
Your take on this thread is about yourself. This thread is not about natural hair vs. permed hair. Again this thread was directed at those who are natural or considering going natural and where they see the movement going. Period! Therefore if you decide to respond to a thread that has nothing to do with you.....then it is you who are turning this into a perm vs. natural debate!! Your hair, your body, your business!
As I said before........you like perming then keep doing it......thread is for those that gave up perming or are considering giving up perming.
You should've stated that in your ORIGINAL post then... There were quite a few RELAXER HEADS posting in this forum at the beginning...
Thanks for the clarification, though. Won't be returning since I am in love with the CREAMY CRACK...
If you would have THOROUGHLY read the previous posts you would have noticed where I mentioned the various reasons I have heard from black women over the years about why they continue to perm their hair. Again if you are not natural then this has nothing to do with you....continue your love affair with the creamy crack!
There have always been those in the African American community that have worn natural hair, from dreadlocks to braids to afro puffs. However since going natural (Sisterlocks) myself 6 months ago I am now noticing a really strong movement of African American women becoming more interested in wearing their hair natural.
Do you think the natural hair movement is going to continue to be popular and attract more African American women to go natural?
Please note this thread is directed at black women who are already wearing their hair natural or considering starting to wear their natural hair...

This was not stated in the BEGINNING...... From the beginning it seem to me from your very own posts its seems to be to be about permed vs natural..... like you are trying to convince others to go natural and convince others how bad perms are.......It was you who brought up god and MJ which have nothing to do with how you wear your hair......you keep speaking of true reasons I mean really are you a psychologist? you just started going natural and now you are the poster child? Come one already

I would much rather worry about what God thinks of me as a person when I decide to change the person he created me to be..........it is saying to God that he made a mistake and there is something wrong with the person he created........God does not make mistakes!! It is so much deeper then hairstyling choices........there is something really sick in this world when people tell us that there is something wrong with something that is naturally growing from our heads and convincing us that we must change it or walk around in society feeling inadequate. The same people that created the straight hair, weaved, curly video vixen looks better PROPAGANDA are the same people who have a hatred toward black people..........they only want our destruction.
It all begins in the home.......mothers are the first teachers and influence of the children..........when mothers use the hot comb and chemicals to straighten their daughters hair........it sends a negative message to a young child that what God gave them is a mistake and not good enough............this is the reason so many of us grow up with the thought that we must perm. Also if the daughter see's mommy with a perm in her hair she is going to grow up and imitate mommy. My loctician has a daughter that is around 13 years old..........her daughter wears beautiful dreadlocks just like her mother...........she told me that her daughter has no idea what it is like to have a perm in her hair because she has never permed it........that is such a beautiful thing. Yea and I have a friend who was that daughter and got into highschool and chopped off the dreads only to get what? A Perm
If we begin in the home by making our daughters confident the natural way we can begin to erase this FALSE idea in the black community's head that we must perm in order to fit in to society. Who says conformity is a good thing.........I would much rather be UNIQUE then look like a carbon copy of those that hate my black beauty anyway.

However the problem is that most black women are not doing it to simply have fun with different hairstyles or get dolled up. They are doing it because this society has shown us that doors are closed to us when we decide to embrace our natural hair. Since the days of slavery we have been taught (brainwashed) to believe that there is something wrong with being our natural selves. We were taught that if we want to be accepted into white society that we must conform and try to look as white as possible.
Yes it is very different then white women coloring their hair or asian women curling there hair. It is different because white and asian women were not raised in a society where they are taught that they MUST change to be accepted. You coloring your hair as a white woman or an asian woman curling their hair is by CHOICE......totally different from the reasons a black woman is doing it. No one in this society is going to stop a white or asian woman from getting a job because she got "dolled up" and colored her hair! You simply can not compare the views of generations of black women whose ancestors went through 400 years of slavery and were taught that we have to conform in order to be accepted in white society to that of the views of white and asian women. That is like comparing apples to oranges! And how is this different? They all want to be something they are not or have something that they naturally dont
It is way beyond getting dolled up.......perming is permanently changing the structure of the hair. I truly believe that if we did not have the idea that doors would be closed to us if we wear our natural hair........many more black women would feel comfortable going natural.
So is hair coloring. But you still have not addressed the issue of color(dye/rinses) not being natural? Could it be that you have gold or red locks yourself? hmmm I wonder

You can not control the responses that are sent to this thread in response to the posting. I do not have to convince other black women about anything......they all already know how bad the perms are for the hair......nonetheless I am not going to be CENSORED when discussing my reasons for leaving the perms alone. If I feel that I want to tell people my reasons for leaving the perms alone.........then I will do it. When I hear things from other black women saying that they continue to perm because they feel they would miss out on job opportunities.........then this is a free country and I have a right to call it exactly what it is PROPAGANDA and BRAINWASHING directed at us by society. In addition to that if I choose to mention Michael Jackson as an example of the same PROPAGANDA that is causing us to have these thoughts.......AGAIN MY RIGHT...to say what MY OPINION IS!! Or for example when I receive a response from a white woman who is trying to compare the experiences of black women to white and asian women......AGAIN MY RIGHT to answer that person using whatever examples I want to use. Regarding coloring of locks........are my locks colored? No Am I against coloring dreadlocks? To each his own.....whatever makes people happy....their body, their health, their business! My reasons are my reasons.........no I will not color my locks because I don't want the chemicals!
From the BEGINNING the word NATURAL in the title for the thread should have given you the understanding that this thread is about NATURAL HAIR!! Therefore if you have permed hair then LOGIC would dictate that you not respond to the thread! We are all adults so should not have to clarify that. If you are SENSITIVE about other peoples, views, thoughts and opinions then stop reading the thread.

If you are SENSITIVE then dont post on CD.......it is my right to express my opinion as well and half of what you posted is PROPAGANDA and BRAINWASHING.....if you wouldnt have stepped on the soap box to preach then you would have ppl like me to comment on your words........PERIOD. I am not here to tell black women not to go natural or that it is wrong in any way shape or form. Black ppl are the biggest mimics ever. ITs easier for ppl to listen to someone elses word than to research for yourself!!!!!! You are new to this natural way of life you still dont even have your feet wet. So please do your research before you pass on more nonfactual advice. It was you that brought up off topic things (ie god and MJ)but when you feel the argument isnt going your way you want to dismiss it and say that isnt what the thread is about. I am strictly comment on what Ive read and expressing how I feel about that..you can continue to get your panties in a bunch over it but I am unfazed and will continue to express myself. Black is beautiful in any way, shape, or form you choose to express it. Its not about other ppl its not about god its about how you feel and what you want. PERIOD. Maybe if you spent more time talking about the good in natural instead of trying to make it seem as if not being natural equates to not being black/proud enough then we wouldnt be having this argument.
