I decided to try waxing my legs for the first time. I've been shaving them forever, but I am really getting tired of it! I got a Sally Hansen "Brazilian Formula Extra Strength All-Over Body Wax" kit at CVS, but I doubt it is the real thing since it does include fabric strips. I tried it out on my lower leg/ankle area where my hair is more dark and coarse than the rest. I was pleasantly surprised that it really didn't hurt anywhere near as much as I had been led to beleive. I was not really satisfied with this kit, though. The wax itself is OK I guess, it heated in the microwave. It was very stringy when it was the right temperature but perhaps that is common? It did grab well and didn't leave much hair behind, but the after-wax oil/wax remover couldn't remove excess wax at all and I had to throw on some long pants and go to Sally's to get a better wax remover. I got Gigi brand, and it easily removed the wax (even after sitting on my skin for more than an hour! ) and had a really lovely pina colada scent. Which got me thinking I should try a Gigi wax, but there are so many types I had no idea what to pick!

I am leaning towards the Gigi hard Brazilian microwave wax that requires no fabric strips. Has anyone used that type? Is it too difficult for a beginner and I should stick with the fabric strip kind? I am primarily interested in waxing my legs from the knees down. Any pointers and especially specific brand recommendations are welcome.

I got some Sally Hansen stuff at Walmart. It was in strips, no microwave necessary, you just like rub it in your hands.

It does kinda work, but it did make me cry. Followed by being very sore for a couple days.

Went back to shaving.

Did you use it on your legs, or more sensitive spots? I would really like to wax my armpits but somehow I think that would be a lot more painful than my legs!

Ahhh! Thanks for your candor. There are certain other sensitive spots that I would REALLY love to be hairless... maybe I should think about that laser, eh?

I regularly wax my bikini, pits, upper lip, eyebrows, legs etc with NADS or Persian something-or-other sugar wax. I can do a pretty good job at this point to rival the salons I used to go to. I also get my naughty parts extremely hair free, and I do a better job than the salon because I think I was embarassed to ask them to remove too much from certain places. If you're flexible, you can do the same. Here are tips if you want to try sugar wax:
1. Trim before waxing. About 1/4 of an inch is okay, I think. It will hurt a lot less this way.
2. Buy a muslin roll. This works better than the strips. You can buy them online and cut to size.
3. Wash and dry your skin with plain soap and cool water. Completely dry your skin off.
4. Keep your skin and the wax relatively cool while you're waxing and dry off if you sweat.
5. Spread wax in the direction of skin growth.
6. Smooth on the strip in the direction that you spread the wax.
7. Pull off Quickly in the opposite direction.

Repeat. Also, I don't recommend re-using the wax strips. I tried this and it does NOT work.

Also, girls in the middle east make their own wax, and in some countries like Afganistan, they even wax off ALL (or nearly all) their body hair. I have heard you can make sugar wax yourself, but I'm too lazy. Apparently if it's hard enough, you don't even need strips, like in the following youtube video:

I tried the GiGi Creme wax (using the muslin strips) and it worked very well but was MESSY. I suppose if I had been more careful, or aware of what a mess it was, it would've been fine. However, the wax dried around the container so I couldn't get the lid back on and I ended up just tossing it. Also sacrificed a small plate to microwave it on and a bathroom rug. The hard wax may be better, if you do the soft wax have a paper plate on hand, and cover the area you're working in. It was a ***** to scrape off wax from the sink I was working over. The wax remover worked but I needed a LOT of it.

I ended up buying an epilator instead and find that it's much less messy and cheaper (well, cheaper after the initial $60 investment) than home waxing.

What brand of epilator do you have? I was looking at epilators at Sally's today but decided to go with a wax kit for now. I picked up the all-purpose stripless honee but I haven't tried it yet.

I forgot to add that I wipe the area with alcohol after I remove the hair.

I had some Brazilian wax - I think it was Sally Hansen. I was gonna attempt to *ahem* wax my bikini area. So, like an idiot, I enlisted the help of my husband. I told him how to do it (having been to the salon numerous times for my waxing) and he put on so much wax that it was imposible to get off!

When he attempted to pull pull the wax and the hair off, I thought I was gonna die! I ended up holding an extremely hot washcloth to my bikini area to melt off as much wax as I could, then cutting the rest off with a pair of scissors, then shaving all the hair off. Let me tell you - it was a b*tch when the hairs started growing in. Talk about itch city!!!

I've learned not to do at home what I pay a professional at the salon to do. The $40 I spend for a Brazilian is totally worth every penny!
