We are thinking about spending 4 or 5 days at the end of August in Virginia Beach. We are in our 50's with no kids. Like to hang out on the beach and perhaps cruise the boardwalk a little to take in the sights(???). We will be heading to DC after (or before, not sure yet) that to attend the 828 Project. Can you guys and gals give us any advice where to stay and eat in the area.
I am assuming we want to be somewhere near the boardwalk but never having been there we are not really sure. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would rent a house in sandbridge and avoid the strip, but that's a local view. I outgrew the strip in my late teens early 20s.

We are only staying for 4 days and would like to experience the strip. The wife likes to run on the beach early in the morning so we like to stay as close as possible to the beach. That is really our main event of the day.

Sandbridge is the locals beach. It's just sand and beach. If you really want the strip I would stay at the Laskin rd end blocks 30+.

If you want to stay at the Oceanfront I would suggest The Cavalier Hotel. There are 2 but the older one is very charming and just a few blocks from the beach.

The Cavalier Hotel, Historic Hotels of America

If you want to stay somewhere on the beach and boardwalk, I would suggest the Hilton. They have a restaurant called Catch 31 that is very good. I think the best restaurants in the area are away from the boardwalk. My favorite is One Fish, Two Fish. Also, Bubba's and Chick's on the Lynnhaven inlet (about 15-20 minutes north along the oceanfront right after it turns into the Chesapeake Bay).

JH are there a lot of seafood selections at the restaurants that you mentioned. The wife is really into seafood.

If you are at the Oceanfront, you could also try C.P. Shuckers, Mahi-Mah's, Tau Togs, Waterman's (great Orange Crush cocktails!), Doc Taylor's (especially for Sunday Brunch), Big Sam's and Rockafellers on Winston Salem Ave on the Inlet are some other great seafood spots.

I agree with jhrichmond, Bubba's and One Fish, Two Fish are delicious restaurants in the Chick's Beach area.

All the restaurants mentioned are for the most part seafood restaurants so your wife will have plenty of options.

So these are not typical tourist trap restaurants with terrible food, right? They have decent foods at reasonable prices? Maybe I will go online and try to look at a few menus of the ones you mentioned. Thanks.

The ones that I mentioned that are reasonable would be Big Sams, Bubba's, CP Shuckers and Doc Taylors. The others can be pricey, especially One Fish, Two Fish. They all usually have Happy Hour specials and food specials on certain days of the week though.

I would not consider any "tourist traps" and mostly local's places with great food, IMO.
