Hi there, I am new to all this, so I appologize right off the bat if I post somewhere I shouldn't. My husband and I are 32 years old and we have 2 dogs. We may be relocating to Norfolk/VA beach for my job. I am wondering about the commute from VA Beach to Norfolk for an 8-5 job. Any worse than Northern/Central NJ traffic? I am considering the Maple Bay Townhouses if this helps with traffic times. I appreciate any information that anyone would want to share with me. We have never been to the area. I read all about the jet noise....I lived about 5 minutes from the Orlando Airport and was not bothered. Is this about what I can expect to deal with? Thanks!!!

Commuting from Maple Bay to Norfolk at the hours you mention will likely take at least 30-40 minutes or so, depending on where in Norfolk you're going to be working. If you have to take 64 west then you'll run hit the base traffic plus the traffic heading for the tunnel to the Peninsula. If you're going more downtown then you won't get that traffic but you could hit the traffic from the Berkley Bridge/Downtown Tunnel, heading into Portsmouth. You'll get the opposite heading back in the afternoon-all the people leaving the Peninsula and Portsmouth. Traffic in this area can be a real pain.

I've never lived near an airport but jet noise from Oceana can be hard to get used to. The pilots practice touch and go landings there for carrier landing practice so you can get a pretty steady roar around the area. I think they also run engine tests where they power up the engines without taking off and those get really loud. I can hear them from where I am, in Green Run. I might be mistaken about the source of that noise but that's what I've been told it is. And of course you'll have the squadrons coming in or going out with the carrier deployments. I don't live in the flight path but I have friends who do; they say you get used to it eventually.

I moved here from North Jersey about two years ago. I drive from Norfolk to Newport News every day and find the traffic to be much less than NJ. My drive is typically less than an hour. A majority of the traffic is going to be at the tunnels and near the Navy bases in the morning.
