My wife and I moved to Norfolk about 2 months ago. We moved from New Hampshire where just 1/2hr drive and you could be at a nice river to swim. Is there anyplace like that close? Or do we have to go a couple hrs out?

Sure, there's plenty of rivers (no waterfalls, it's too flat) but I wouldn't even stick my big toe in them.

Survey finds plenty of pollution in Virginia waters | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

Water quality and the environment aren't big concerns for HR residents, unfortunately.

We swim in the Chickahominy when we boat and the York River. You can go to the beach in Yorktown to take dip in the York River. Nice Waterfalls in the Blue Ridge Mountains.( about 4 hours away)

Swim in the ocean or the bay. You don't want to be in the Elizabeth River...

This isn't in Hampton Roads, but the Shenandoah River is a nice river to go tubing and wading. There are various waterfalls situated along the Blue Ridge Parkway. They are usually a couple miles hike from parking. There is Great Falls on the Potomac which is very nice. That is honestly the best waterfall I have seen in VA.

If you are looking for waterfalls, check out Crabtree Falls in Nelson County Va, but again like everyone else has stated you are going to want to go to the mountains, all of the waterways around Hampton Roads are pretty nasty

Love Crabtree Falls. Gorgeous this time of year! Have not been there in forever. I also went camping and hiking near Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park and there was a beautiful waterfall there as well.

Yeah, there aren't any swimable lakes or rivers in HR. You have to go a few hrs west.
