Follow the hipsters, and you will find indie. Ghent area in Norfolk is where its at for that stuff.

You might want to check out the Indie Discovery Series at The Attucks Theater (http://www.discoverymusicseries.com/artists.html - broken link)in Norfolk

Check out the indie bands at the Attucks but don't expect to find any indie people hanging out anywhere around there. It's not in the greatest part of town.

other than the occasional "popular"(and i use this work for lack of a better word for the well known bands) indie band that passes through the Jewish Mother or the Norva, which is rare, there's nothing but small local indie bands. I moved here from Chapel Hill, NC which has an amazing scene. This place is lame for music.

thanks for responding everybody. I only asked because I had seen it posted several other places about the music 'scene' here and after looking everywhere I was beginning to think those people were confused. haha apparently I was right. well I'm going to the norva dec. 1st to see minus the bear and Tim Kasher. I'm sure if there's any cool people that's where they'll be. well either cool people, or douche bags. there's usually no in between. haha bye and see you there maybe

Lol. It's definitely a "culture shock" for Norfolk types who are just used to the few blocks of downtown Granby St. and the Colley Ave. portion of Ghent. I saw Billy Bragg there back in 2008 and Camera Obscura last year. What was funny about the Camera Obscura show was that you can definitely tell a lot of the people in attendance were most likely members of that Discover Music series. Their Richmond show back in June was PACKED compared to their Norfolk show. For a relatively popular band(top 30 in Europe/UK, #87 on the US Billboard charts for their last album.), to not fill every seat at the Attucks should tell you something about this area when it comes to what people prefer.

Pertaining to your username, Ghent is probably your best option for a social life. Just walk around and you might find some people who are into the same things. There's actually some zombie-walk thing tonight in that area and an "indie dance night" at the Wave(not in Ghent).
