I'm writing this to warn other families about the Newport News school system, hopefully other families will not have to go through what we have. We are a military family who moved here last summer. We moved to Hilton Village thinking it would be a great neighborhood for us. To make a long story short my daughter age 6 was hit by a car a year ago and she walks with a slight limp. Hilton elementary basicaly kicked my daughter out of their school without warning because they said their building which has stairs and no elevator could not meet her needs. We were forced to send her to Hidenwood Elementary. It is not the worst school in NN but there are many things I do not like about it. One of the biggest things I dislike is how the teachers talk to the students. There have been several occasions when I have seen teachers talking to the kids like they were inmates. It has been a huge strain on our family. We are now planning on moving to Bethel Manor so that she can attend the school there. There is a reason NN schools have a bad reputation. I wish we had listened.

My daughter goes to middle school here in Hampton and it's the same. The teacher's talk to the students really rough and degrading. We moved here from Minnesota and will be moving back next fall. I think that the culture here is repressive..
Thanks for posting your experience.

Oh wow. I was just going to ask about Hidenwood. We are moving down in that district over the summer, but I wanted to get more information on other school around that area.

I will say the principal is dedicated and I can tell he is trying to turn the school around, however I have seen one too many things that I did not like. You should go check it out for yourself if you are considering moving there. You can't fully believe what you read online. I read that Hilton was a great school and it turned out to be a nightmare. Good Luck!

A quick note on Hilton (and it applies more generally to all the NN schools): The principals really matter. Hilton was a solid school (still is, in many ways) - but the district rotated principals at the start of the '10-'11 school year. The new principal at Hilton (she came from Riverside) has (IMHO) some control freak tendencies, with a certain streak of diva. Rough transition, according to many of the teachers...

Default Gifted Program (TAGS?)

Hi, NN school offers a wonderful program of talented and gifted (TAG) program. You definitely want to check this program for your children.
Different from other local schools, NN TAG program allows TAG students stay in the same classroom without mixing with other regular students.
But, I just found out the program is just for 3rd grader or older.

I'm sorry that happened to your daughter. Being in an accident is hard enough on a kid, esp one your daughter's age, to force her out of school is despicable. There are so many emotional ramifications a child can go through from that.

It's also distressing news for me. My daughter and I are relocating to NN in 2 weeks. She'll be 3 in Sept. so we have some time until she starts school, but it's never good to hear that the school system sucks.

Does anyone know of any Christian Schools in the area?

Warwick River & Denbigh Baptist are 2 that I'm familiar with, and I believe Trinity Lutheran and Peninsula Catholic are 2 others nearby. That being said, you can't believe everything you hear about the NN schools - I have an elementary school student and a high school student in them and have had no problems. It's all perspective...
