I just accepted a job working near the Langley AFB and am trying to figure out where to look for housing. I currently live in Raleigh, NC, if anybody is familiar with that area. I'm looking for a nice area within 30-40 minutes away, low crime, but not too far away from civilization and for reasonable prices. Does anybody have any suggestion on where to start looking? I'm thinking of starting north of Hampton on the peninsula to avoid the worst traffic problems. Oh yeah, a decent yard would be nice.

My suggestions would be the Michael's/Hampton Woods area and Tide Mill Rd/Marcella Rd areas in Hampton and if you can live with an apartment Falcon Creek in Hampton is really highly thought of. All of these areas are a hop, skip, and a jump from Langley. If you got a little more coin Southern York County is also a good idea.

People will try to scare you away from Hampton mainly b/c of its crime reputation but it's just like any other city there are good and bad areas. Also Hampton has had a decent year as far as no. of murders go. Hampton has only had 3 when my current residence Alexandria in NoVA has 5 and nearby Newport News has had 20 (15 or 16 on the city's east end).

Do you have school aged children? That info would make a difference in where I would suggest. As Alanboy 395 suggested, I would recommend Falcon Creek and some of the apartments on Marcella in Hampton if you do not have kids in school and are looking for an apartment. If you have kids and want a house/good school, Yorktown is the area to consider (zip code 23693). The prices have really come down and the schools/community are great. If you have more specific questions, ask away..

No children. I'm recently married and fresh out of college. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

There are some nice apartment complexes around and I think Falcon Creek is the newest one. It is on Rt 134 and only 4 miles or so from Langley's wets gate. There are some nice places in parts of Hampton but you have to be a bit careful of where you are. We rented in a place off Marcella when we first arrived and it was a nice community but I can not think of the name of it off the top of my head. They are trying to "revitalize" down town Hampton and are building there as well but they are right acroos the street from some pretty busy bar/pubs. Great when you are out there having fun but not so great when you want some peace and quiet. I would definitly stay on this side of the bridge.. Your trip to work will be so much easier.

York County is a wonderful place to live. It is close to all the businesses in Newport News, and as you move further North towards Gloucester you will start to have larger yards. You may even want to consider Gloucester (you would be boardering on the 40 minute commute you spoke of). There are a good amount of folks at Langley who live out there - it is more rural, but again you will have bigger lot sizes. Newport News and Hampton are nice too, but you are going to have "city-blcck" size lots or less than .25 acre. If there are any questions I can answer about the area please feel free to contact me.
